About the event

Hong Kong's first professional A Cappella Theatre Company Yat Po Singers' brand new double bill - Yat Po Two Shows 2024!

The debut original works created by the Musician Interns Avery Wong and Nick Yam, since joining Yat Po Singers! From concept to composition and arrangement, we present to you a brand new A Cappella theatrical production: Death of the Lead & The Memories of Food.

Death of the Lead
Concept/Composer/Arranger/Music Director/Playwright:Avery Wong

The lead is going on strike! Befuddled by this news, an ensemble tries to persuade their main singer to reclaim the spotlight to no avail. As they struggle to recalibrate, the lead makes her point through more severe measures. Why would the lead reject the limelight? In the lead’s absence, how do the collective voices find their way to true harmony?

The Memories of Food
Concept/Composer/Arranger/Music Director/Playwright:Nick Yam

On his first birthday alone after moving out, a food delivery worker feels an aching need for perhaps “Companionship? Taste? Comfort? Or Memories?” Through each delivery, he encounters lives and stories that reveal fleeting glimpses of the city’s soul. Both up close and from afar, how does he search for something precious in a city that feels like it’s slipping away...

About the organiser

The first professional A Cappella choral theatre company in Hong Kong. The founding Co-Artistic Directors are Patrick Chiu, Ng Cheuk-yin and Yuri Ng. Currently led by Ng Cheuk-yin and Anna Lo as the Co-Artistic Directors, the Company focuses on producing and developing original works in order to promote A Cappella art and demonstrate the innovative interaction of music and theatre. Besides, the Company aims at enriching the arts scene particularly by nurturing young composers and artists, audience building and arts education.

The Company’s first A Cappella theatre production Rock Hard received the CASH Golden Sail Music Award in the Best Serious Composition category from the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong in 2009. In 2015, the Company received the Award for Arts Promotion from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Another A Cappella theatre work, Our Immortal Cantata (Re-run), was awarded The Best Original Music & Lyrics, The Best Sound Design and also one of The Best Productions of the Year by the 26th Hong Kong Drama Awards in 2017. In 2019, the Company’s collaboration with City Contemporary Dance Company Requiem HK was awarded the Outstanding Large Venue Production. In 2020, Love, Death, and Everything In-between, was awarded The Best Lyrics by the 29th Hong Kong Drama Awards. In 2024, Om Encounter was awarded The Best Original Music (Musical) by the 32nd Hong Kong Drama Awards.

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in 2019-2022, the Company organized a three-year elderly A Cappella choral and life enrichment project: “Jockey Club Yat Po ‘Happy A-ge-cappella’”, which motivated the elders by cultivating their talent, strengthening their self-confidence and bonding with people through the A Cappella training programmes and activities.

Throughout the three years training, the elders performed with experienced singers, with the aim of connecting the two generations. The elders also gained opportunities to perform on stages and made music videos which drew the public attentions to create an inclusive society. In 2023, the Company was recognized for the project and awarded the Award for Arts Promotion and Education by the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards.

With the kind support by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Company begins a new chapter of “Jockey Club Yat Po ‘Happy A-ge-cappella’” in 2023-2026, and continues to bring positivity to the society through A Cappella.

Yat Po Singers is financially supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
