The culture of incense has a long history in China. Its significant role is manifested in many aspects of Chinese culture, ranging from religious rituals to literary gatherings. The use and appreciation of incense was closely intertwined with the aesthetics of life and artistic creation in ancient China. This exhibition showcases a constellation of precious artefacts, including ceramics, bamboo carvings, paintings and bronze objects from the collections of both Shanghai Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, spanning from the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty, taking the audience on an olfactory journey across thousands of years.
