European Union Film Festival 2023 Introduction

Welcome to the 2023 edition of the European Union Film Festival!

The European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, in close collaboration with the Member States and Switzerland and in association with the Broadway Cinematheque, is pleased to present the European Union Film Festival 2023. Here’s a sneak peek of our opening and closing films!

2023 marks the second year of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. As last year, the EUFF will open with a Ukrainian film to demonstrate support and solidarity with Ukraine and its brave people. The opening film of this year, Luxembourg, Luxembourg, is a comedy from Ukraine, featuring twin brothers searching for their father, who they have heard will soon pass away in Luxembourg. The film does not touch on the issue of war, but displays a different side of Ukraine, the striving of Ukrainian people for a normal life with laughter and love.

The festival closes with the film from Czech Republic, Even Mice Belong in Heaven. It is a family animation about two mortal enemies - a little Mouse and a Fox, who after an unfortunate accident, meet in animal heaven. They lose their natural instincts and become best friends. Their wish to stay together after they return to earth comes true, but they are reborn into opposite roles. Thanks to the power of friendship they can even overcome what seems to be impossible. The animation was selected by Annecy Festival in 2021.
