SHOUT Contemporary is pleased to present New Order – Age of Consent, an inaugural exhibition to celebrate the gallery’s grand opening in Elements Mall.

The exhibition brings together five artists. Among them, three from Hong Kong: Hung Keung, Kongkee (Kong Hongchuen), and Tse Yimon. And two from Mainland China: Shen Zhenglin and Song Yuanyuan. Each artist responds to the exhibition title via a wide range of different genres, including paintings, digital print with hand embellishments on canvas, limited edition of silkscreen prints and, limited edition of digital prints, digital art and art NFTs.

The exhibition title New Order - Age of Consent comes from an influential 1980’s British electronic music band and one of their popular songs. The band came to prominence in the 80s at the backdrop of the Third Industrialization period when digital technology started to proliferate. In retrospect, we have come a long way. How do we go forward, though, is an open-ended question.

Global social politics and economic dynamics have changed quite radically in recent years, and was accelerated by Covid19 in the past couple of years. Digitalization in everyday life, the rise of blockchain economy, art NFT and decentralized consensus. We are living in the fourth Industrial Revolution with the omni-use and commonness of technological used throughout society. The Web3 and Metaverse that affect the way humans experience the world around us have changed, it blurs the lines between physical and digital. The magnitude of this change is yet to be known.

Age of Consent, the sub-title of the exhibition, is a double take of the legal term which is ironic in a world of decentralization and individualism. The world is at a turning point that will take us to a place where we have never been before. Our lives will never be the same again. Embracing change and celebrating our differences is perhaps the only way forward.
