Performance Introduction

This new series of performances mixes it up with indie, jazz, classical, contemporary classical, electronic and hip-hop – bringing together musicians from Freespace Ensemble with top Hong Kong artists for exciting cross-genre collaborations.

On 16 and 17 September, our guest performers are jazz pianist Joyce Cheung and young indie singer-songwriters Kiri T, whose background is R&B, and Moon Tang, known for her whimsical acoustic pop. Coming together with four musicians from Freespace Ensemble – Sally Law (violin), Bernard Chan (cello), Jackiz Tsang (bass) and Dean Li (drums) – they perform familiar original songs rearranged by Joyce Cheung in ways that are sure to enchant and delight.

About the artist

Free Space Ensemble

Freespace Enseble is a cross-genre collaboration of popular local Hong Kong musicians brought together in 2021 to experiment with new compositions and arrangements.

Joyce Cheung

Joyce Cheung is a Hong Kong-based jazz pianist, arranger and composer, and a co-artistic director at festival organiser Music Lab. An established performer, she is a frequent collaborator with well-known Hong Kong musicians and pop stars such as Chan Fai-young, Joey Yung, On Chan and Grasshopper. Cheung spent her formative years at the Berklee College of Music, having graduated with first-class honours in Film Scoring as well as Contemporary Writing and Production in 2014 and obtained her Master’s degree in Contemporary Performance in 2017. Her debut album, Set Loose, was released in September 2020. In addition to her career as a performer, she is also a versatile arranger and a passionate educator. She has conducted masterclasses at the Musicians.Education Festival in Prague, and currently works as a lecturer of the jazz programme at the Education University of Hong Kong.

Kiri T

Singer-songwriter Kiri T is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, who currently splits her time between New York and Hong Kong. She has established herself in the Asian music scene as a crafter of catchy indie-pop hits, and has written and produced songs for the likes of HOCC, Kary Ng, Joey Yung, Waa Wei and Jan Lam. Her music features a combination of sultry vocals, astute lyrics and a smooth blend of influences from electronic music to R&B. Her debut album Golden Kiri was released in 2019, followed in 2021 by Chili T.

Moon Tang

Moon Tang is a Hong Kong-based singer-songwriter who began her music career after winning the first runner-up prize at the Hong Kong Supernova 2017. She joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Polyarts Acoustic Music Society in 2018 and served as co-director for its annual performance the following year. In 2020, her cover of a classic Canto-pop song was featured in the microfilm Hong Kong NeonLights to popular acclaim. In the same year, she released her debut EP, Dear Moon.

Precautions

  • Lau Bak Livehouse will be open for ticket holders only during the performance, and no food, drinks or takeaways will be served.
  • Children ages 6 and below will not be admitted.
  • On the performance day, present your ticket to enjoy 12% off food and drinks at Lau Bak Livehouse.
  • Severe weather arrangement: If the tropical cyclone warning signal is No. 8 or higher or the black rainstorm warning is still in effect 3 hours before the start of the performance, the event will be cancelled.
