The Murray Hong Kong Hotel Review: An Office-Turned-Urban Retreat Right In The Heart of Hong Kong’s Financial District

In a city known for its towering skyscrapers and dense residential condominiums, heritage sites aren’t easy to come by. In fact, many are long gone by now, with only a few remaining - The Murray Hong Kong being one of them. 

Boasting the same white-stone facade, recessed windows and monumental archways from when it was first built in 1969, The Murray Hong Kong’s doesn’t exactly stand out in a sea of muted office buildings in the financial district. But the allure of this unassuming heritage hotel unravels from the moment guests step foot inside its doors - into an urban retreat that’s been dubbed as one of the best luxury hotels in the city. 

While the office-turned-hotel displays many of the usual amenities every other 5-star hotel would offer, luxury at The Murray isn’t defined by the grandiosity of its furnishings or splashy exterior. The Murray wows in both layout and design, deviating from the typical template of most luxury hotels in the city. The former is partially thanks to the building’s original recessed windows overlooking Hong Kong Park and The Peak, which were retained to allow for gorgeous lightplay and cozy study nooks. To complement the layout, the rooms are thoughtfully decorated with sleek and handsome interiors, which showcase luxury without sacrificing space or design. Each room is given life and dimension through color and texture, accentuated by muted earth tones and the use of leather, wood, and plush rugs. 

The hotel houses 336 guest rooms and suites, most of which offer more than 50-square meters of space. While the smallest guest room, the Superior Room, stands at just under 40-square meters in size, its got quite a large closet and a marble shower bathroom to boot. Following in size are the N1 Deluxe, N2 Grand and N3 Grand Deluxe guestrooms, which average at about 50-square meters in dimension, and include a desk nook and spacious lounging area. 

The guest bathrooms are just as stunning with its marble-clad walls, gold fixtures and a rich contrast of black furnishings that truly elevate the experience. 

The suites at The Murray offer a unique luxury in the hotel scene: separate living spaces. The smallest of the six available suites, The Explorer Suite and the Signature Suite, already packs a punch with its chic design, corner location, garden or cityscape views, and separate bath and shower - all within its 75-square meter frame. 

For slightly more space at 100-square meters, the Cotton Tree Suite and the Park Suite are stunning options as well. Though similar in size and amenities, the two suites differ in design and room views. While the Cotton Tree Suite boasts a lavish cool-tone design to mimic its cityscape views, the Park Suite’s blue and green room accents blend seamlessly with its Hong Kong Park views. 

For a no holds barred stay, the Penthouse Suite or the Murray Suite will exceed expectations. Boasting 125 and 225-square meters of space respectively, these suites will offer guests a different level of luxury that’s not easy to come by in the city. 

The dining situation at The Murray is unrivaled - and that’s quite a statement to make considering Hong Kong’s culinary landscape. But with five restaurants situated in this one address, guests are guaranteed to be delighted with the options set before them. 

Starting off with the most important meal of the day, Tai Pan serves up a delectable selection for breakfast that’ll truly wake up the senses! Each dish is created only with fresh, organic ingredients and artisan produce, elevating the flavours of their Western and Chinese menu. Tai Pan offers all-day dining, with The Cotton Tree Terrace open for seating beginning at noon. 

Lunchtime displays a myriad of options for guests, as all five restaurants open for operation. MIAN, the newest dining establishment at The Murray, offers an extensive Chinese menu crafted by Sichuan-born chef Ronald Shao. With recipes celebrating all eight traditional Chinese cuisines, MIAN boasts a culinary experience that’ll take guests on a sensory journey. 

If your brunch or lunchtime preferences are calling for an outdoor dining affair, The Garden Lounge would be an excellent choice. In addition to its no-fail Asian and American dining menu, the restaurant offers quite a feast for both the palette and the eyes with its glamorous gold-accentuated interior and floor-to-ceiling windows - which look over to St. John’s Cathedral. Alternatively, guests are also welcome to enjoy the same views and ambiance during afternoon tea here - relishing scones and cookies inspired by the hotel's architecture, other savouries, and of course, guests’ choice of illy coffee or jing tea. 

As the day winds down, head up to the hotel’s rooftop for dinner and drinks at Popinjays. Boasting a 420-meter wrap-around terrace, skyline views, and a varied mix of both classic and bespoke alcoholic beverages on the menu, it’s no wonder that Popinjays is hailed as one of the best rooftop bars in the city. 

For a more intimate setting, Murray Lane down at the hotel lobby offers a premium selection of wine, spirits and craft beer to choose from as well! What makes this place a standout in Hong Kong’s vibrant bar scene is it’s Wall-Street-inspired design, a fitting location for office-goers looking to end the day with a tipple. 

Given Hong Kong’s dense population and sleepless energy, locals and tourists would be hard pressed to find a proper retreat in the city. The Murray Hong Kong’s wellness offerings extend to the hotel’s indoor lap pool located at the lobby. The lap pool is set against an artificial waterfall and some lush greenery, which is a thoughtful incorporation of the hotel’s green design. But apart from a refreshing few laps, guests can also access the sauna, steam room and chilled relax pool in the same area.
