What to expect
Step into a traditional machiya townhouse in Kyoto’s historic Nishijin district and experience the refined beauty of Kyoto Yuzen, one of Japan’s most celebrated dyeing arts. Held inside the artisan’s own home, this experience offers a rare chance to visit a traditional residence while taking part in an authentic hands-on craft.
Guided by the artisan, you will select one or two colors, with the remaining tones carefully chosen to create balance and harmony. As you apply color to silk, you’ll learn about the tools, techniques, and history of Yuzen dyeing through direct practice. The calm atmosphere of the machiya allows you to fully immerse yourself in the process. You will take home your own Yuzen-dyed piece, a meaningful keepsake connected to Kyoto’s living textile heritage.

Reviews
This experience was really amazing. I’m so glad I went. Learning about the history of the technique of silk dyeing and seeing first hand the master create the colour inks you choose to use was incredible.
Very cozy and fun! Mr. Shin showed us around and was very sweet and inquisitive. We arrived early but he was happy to keep us entertained while we waited for the interpreter, Ha, who was also very helpful and sweet. Our artworks came out beautiful, thanks to the guidance of both Mr. Shin and Ms. Ha.
We truly enjoyed the whole experience. the artist was very generous in sharing of stories and history. He was very kind and patient. the translator was also knowledgeable and all four of our family liked what we created. You are truly welcomed into his home and workshop.
This experience was amazing! Our instructor is a master in his field and his guidance was excellent as we were dyeing his artwork. Our translator was also extremely personable and she assisted us greatly as we are not fluent in Japanese. If you are in Japan in December, he also has Christmas and Santa designs available for dyeing which was a pleasant surprise! This is a truly cultural experience that anyone can do and have a great time. I will cherish the art we created and will have it hanging on my walls forever. I highly recommend this experience if you are in the Kyoto area!
We had a great experience, it was the Highlight of our trip! they were so kind to let us finish our dye even though it was past the time!
This was an absolutely incredible experience and 100% as advertised. Sitting in Master's home, learning from him and having him create colours in front of us so we could paint his works the way we would prefer was wonderful. He is lovely and generous with his patience and guidance, and as two people who are not artistic at all, he made this experience so easy and fun! If you're in Kyoto and looking for a traditional craft experience with a genuine master of the craft you should definitely do this! We are thrilled to be able to take this unique keepsake home with us. 1000 Ookinis Master. :)
It was an amazing experience! I really love it and had fun. You get to experience traditional painting but with your own personality. The owner and profesor has more than 50 years of experience painting kimonos and it was amazing to learn from him. highly recommend
