sacrificial protection | Exhibition Information

‘sacrificial protection’ brings together artists Chok Si Xuan and Victoria Hertel in a new artistic collaboration. Merging material and technological explorations, the outdoor installation reimagines an approach to tropical technology that does not resist climatic factors, instead integrating elements of humidity, water, sunlight and rust into the work itself. The title draws on a corrosion protection method where a more reactive metal is used to protect a primary metal from oxidising.

Evoking on one hand the material harshness of accelerated weathering in tropical climates, ‘sacrificial protection’ also speaks to a softer practice of care and mutual co-constitution with our environment, where the bodily comes into contact with the elemental. The exhibition is a product of an extended engagement between both artists, responding to each other’s practices as well as the environmental conditions of the site.
