When the People's will and the rule of law are hanging in the balance, who dares to defend justice against all odds?

Hailed as a great soul of India, Rabindranath Tagore had been an acclaimed poet and philosopher long before the bestowment of the Nobel Prize for Literature on him. He strived to conserve oriental civilisations and respect every life. However, in a turbulent time when conflicts among the world’s powers were imminent, industrialisation and aggressive nationalism were overwhelming, and worldly desires were rampant, many national leaders turned against Tag`ore and denounced his teaching in goodness and beauty, poisoning the minds of those idealistic young people.Resembling the situation Tagore had faced when his poems were maligned as“poisonous,” Chen Che-hao’s persistent pursuit of justice is regarded as an obstacle that hinders the progress of the rule of law and distorts the values of life the community holds.

Based on a shocking indiscriminate murder case in Taiwan, The Advocate presents to the audience a post-tragedy community where “evil for evil” becomes the new norm and the condemned Wang Ranis whom the whole community wants dead. Yet his defense lawyer, Chen Che-hao, after learning about Wang’s mental abnormality and unfair treatment during the interrogations, insists on applying for an appeal. Amidst the violent to-and-fro tussles between the rule of law and popular will, Chen Che-hao stands up against the people, resulting in alienation and entangling his family in danger. Still, he insists that even the most sinful being deserves respect and believes “restorative justice” can advance society.

The Advocate, written by award-winning playwright Ivan Kwok, stage-designed by renowned scenographer Tsang Man-tung and directed by Dominic Cheung, Artistic Director of Chung Ying Theatre Company, was premiered in 2022 and aroused considerable interest and discussion. This year, Chung Ying will rerun the play and ponder on the weight of life together with our audience.
