Show Introduction

Gelek is a work-in-progress showcase platforming six new dance works by Malay-identifying choreographers Afiq Noorazwa, Bib Mockram, Lyn Hanis, Shahrul Azhar Marekan, Syarifuddin Sahari and Syimah Sabtu. Having undergone a six-month choreographic lab, they now present their responses to the notion of gelek, a Malay term that describes the dance movement of the hip from side to side.  

These choreographers will preview works that explore a diversity of perspectives regarding bodily explorations, identity and gender inspired by discourse about the contemporary movement practice of Malay bodies, asking, “what does it really mean to gelek?” 

As part of their development process, choreographers invite audience members to respond to their presentations. The critical response sessions held at the end of each showcase are moderated by Norhaizad Adam and Soultari Amin Farid.
