Concert Introduction

Connecting across Centuries: HK Phil with the Esmé Quartet, conducted by Wilson Ng
Wilson Ng has been described as “one of the fastest-rising talents in the conducting world”, winning major conducting prizes in Bamberg, Frankfurt and Paris, and is the youngest ever associate conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
In their third concert in the Festival, the Esmé Quartet begins with Beethoven’s mighty Große Fuge before joining Ng and the orchestra in John Adams’s Absolute Jest—an extraordinary homage to Beethoven from one of the most celebrated contemporary composers. This is followed by the symphonic version of a Brahms piano quartet, arranged by Schoenberg, one of the most influential composers of the past century. A concert that connects across time, place and cultures.
