What to expect
korean decorative painting korean decorative painting is a cute and warm picture with the hope that we will live happily. Since early times, our ancestors have expressed their wish to live happily ever after, by borrowing from nature. Now, listen to the story of a flower and a bird. You can feel the warmth of korean decorative painting.
Folk paintings of Flower “The folk painting’s treasure is the flower” was a saying that revealed the popularity of the flower. Near the end of Chaegoeri(Painting of books and things), flowers became more common and Moonjado(Ideographs) were changed to flower chacacters, landscapes pictures contained more flowers than scenery, and flowers became more popular and colorful in depicting decorative motifs. Not only were they decorative, but also flowers were symbols of good fortune.
Moran-do(Peony) Many unknown flowers are painted in korean decorative painting, but among them, Moran flowers are the most popular. The peony represents a life of riches and honor. Especially, moran with 3-6 colors were frequently used in royal marriage and funerals of Joseon courts. It was a painting that blessed the sanctity of marrige and could not be missing decorations. Morando is a painting that shows the colorful colors of a large flower. So, it has been painted by further maximizing its splendor and using unrealistic colors. Later, they tried to emphasize the meaning of blessing by combining animal, bird, and various shapes of stone with Moran. So, moran became a beloved painting by everyone from the royal court to ordinary people. And it was loved not only for paintings but also to decorate household items.
