What to expect
ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Course Itinerary (3 days) Day 1: Introduction to Basics and Hands-on Experience
- Morning: History of sailing, principles of navigation, sailboat structure, sailing direction
- Afternoon: Basic seamanship, sailing safety, docking and undocking, familiarization with sails and rudder operation for various wind directions
Day 2: Advanced Practice and Graduation Test
- Morning: Sailing logic, design principles, marine weather, emergency response
- Afternoon: Review Point of Sailing, upwind and downwind tacking practice, upwind stopping practice, downwind sailing practice, secure mooring Day 3: Integrated Operation and Test
- Morning: Basic navigation, collision avoidance rules, anchoring system
- Afternoon: Man Overboard (MOB) rescue operation, ASA101 written & practical test, course review and graduation
ASA 103 Coastal Cruising Course Itinerary (3 days) Day 1: Advanced Boat Handling and Anchoring
- Morning: Course introduction and safety check, introduction to advanced boat equipment (engine, electrical, water systems), review of departure and arrival procedures, harbor maneuvering: low-speed control, docking techniques
- Afternoon
- Offshore sailing practical: upwind/crosswind/downwind control
- Anchoring training (dropping anchor, weighing anchor, confirming position)
- Night navigation preparation and signal light regulations
Day 2: Passage Planning and Navigation Practice
- Morning: Basic navigation (chart reading, bearings, route planning), International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS), weather interpretation and navigation risk management
- Afternoon: Coastal long-distance sailing practice (route planned according to location), students divided into groups to act as "captains," actually formulating and executing sailing plans, Man Overboard (MOB) Drill
Day 3: Integrated Operation and Test
- Morning: Comprehensive boat handling drills: departure, long-distance sailing, docking, emergency response drills (engine failure, sail problems), onboard life management and safety planning
- Afternoon: Students independently lead the boat to complete short-distance sailing, ASA103 written & practical test, course review and graduation
