What to expect

Begin with an introduction to Tsuji-ga-hana, a dyeing style that flourished 500 years ago in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Using archival photos, restored fabrics, and completed works, learn its history and importance. View kimono and textiles for a deeper appreciation of the craft. Next, watch a demonstration of the process, then try sekka shibori, a board-clamping method. By folding, clamping, and dipping fabric into dye, geometric and floral patterns emerge. With guidance, fold and clamp your own silk stole, then dye it with plant-based colors prepared with Kifune’s Full Moon Water. Choose one or two shades such as madder orange, golden flower, lac red, purple lac, or indigo. After rinsing and drying, your finished stole is ready to take home the same day as a one-of-a-kind creation.
