Yuelu Mountain, on the west bank of the Xiang River, is a landmark of Changsha, with many historical sites, including Yuelu Academy and Aiwan Pavilion.

The scenic area has two entrances: the South Gate and the East Gate (also known as the North Gate). Most of the cultural attractions are near the South Gate, including Yuelu Academy at the foot of the mountain, Aiwan Pavilion in Qingfeng Gorge, the ancient Lushan Temple with a history of more than 1,700 years, and Yuelu Taoist Palace on the top of the mountain.

In addition, the mountain also contains the tombs of revolutionary martyrs such as Huang Xing, Chen Tianhua, and Cai E. The East Gate of the scenic area is near the lower station of the cableway, and the upper station of the cableway is Nanniwan Villa in the scenic area, near attractions such as the Yu Wang Stele and the Python Cave.

Yuelu Mountain is also a huge "plant museum" with ancient and famous trees such as Podocarpus of the Jin Dynasty, Ginkgo of the Tang Dynasty, Camphor of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and Maple and Chestnut of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
