we caught the bullet train from Kyoto around to Tokyo and then north to Takasaki. overnighted there and then next day picked up a hirecar at nippon car rental near train station to drive to Shima Onsen (make sure you ask for ETC card for toll roads).what a wonderful experience in a traditional Japanese ryokan - private onsens were outta this world (even my adult children raved about them). clean, comfortable accommodation. staff were amazing. breakfast and dinners included - a unique experience of Japanese multi course meals (absolutely amazing). Autumnal colours of Shima particularly the nearby blue lake exquisite 🙏
