Built by a French diver who fell in love with the view and decided it was too good to keep to himself. That origin story tells you everything about what kind of place this is. The property: Lush, considered, deeply personal. Eclectic interiors: circus art on the restaurant walls, cerulean chinoiserie side tables, books to borrow. Fully booked on my stay and I never once felt the other guests. The food: L'Atelier gets it right. Tanigue steak, pumpkin soup, and a Chicken Tandoori on the last night that made me forget I was on a GLP-1. The breakfast spread — included with the room — is sized generously and genuinely good. The staff: Alan, Florence, Rani — warm in the way that isn't performance. You will feel attended to without feeling managed. The extras: Resident goats Lili and Lala (ask the restaurant for Skyflakes). A spa with facelift and massage packages. Divemasters and boats on call for Anilao's world-class dive spots. Mt. Gulugod Baboy is 30 minutes away.
