About the event
Hawkins, 1959: a quiet town with ordinary troubles, until the arrival of new student Henry Creel unsettles everything. This gripping prequel takes audiences back before the Stranger Things story began, uncovering the origins of the supernatural forces, secrets and friendships that shape the Netflix phenomenon. Combining cinematic scale with jaw-dropping stagecraft, illusion and special effects, the production plunges the audience straight into the Upside Down, delivering scares, spectacle and emotional depth in equal measure. Recommended for ages 12 and up, it's an essential night out for any Stranger Things fan, and a thrilling introduction for newcomers to the world of Hawkins.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow marked Netflix's first move into live theatre, developed from an original story by the Duffer Brothers, the creators of the hit TV series, together with Jack Thorne, and written for the stage by Kate Trefry. Directed by Olivier and Tony Award winner Stephen Daldry with co-director Justin Martin, the production opened at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End in 2023 to critical acclaim, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play. Critics hailed it as 'the West End event of the year' (The Daily Telegraph) and 'a mega five-star hit' (Sunday Times), and it has since become one of London's most in-demand theatrical experiences.
