Hong Kong Open Printshop is pleased to present the ‘Universality and Particularity: Woodcut Portraits in Asia’, a group exhibition curated by our guest curator Krystie Ng. The exhibition will be held at the 1a space from 1 July, showcasing 26 sets of modern and contemporary woodcut prints from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Despite showing a great variety of styles and practices, the woodcut artwork all share the same focus: the interaction between art and society. The printmaking medium serves more than an art form here, it is also a tool for the artists to show solicitude and build solidarity with the local communities.

Woodcut in Asia has emerged as a significant instrument in cultural dissemination. At the beginning of the 20th century, woodcuts per se served as an effective medium to mirror social phenomena due to their simple creation process and intense stylistic boldness. Today, woodcut has evolved and developed into different approaches. By creating artwork with the marginalised communities, woodcut printing has become a powerful medium for communication.
