What to expect
For centuries, Husavik residents have embraced the region’s geothermal waters for bathing and daily life. In the mid-20th century, drilling for household heating unexpectedly uncovered mineral-rich hot seawater instead of freshwater. Though unsuitable for heating homes, locals found an innovative use for this natural resource. An old cheese barrel at Husavikurhofoi was transformed into a bathing spot where residents could enjoy the therapeutic seawater. Kept at a soothing temperature of 38°–39°C, the baths became known for their healing properties, especially for people with skin conditions such as psoriasis. This creative use of geothermal energy highlights Husavik’s deep connection with nature and its longstanding tradition of wellness and community care.
