Lake Biwa is an ancient lake, home to over 2,000 species of organisms, including endemic species found nowhere else. The Lake Biwa Museum showcases the lake’s formation and history, the animals that inhabited the region, the history of people around the lake, and the connection between modern people and the lake. In addition to three exhibition rooms covering geological history, human history, and nature related to our lives, the museum also features one of Japan’s largest freshwater aquariums, spanning approximately 2,000 square meters. The particularly large tunnel aquarium gives visitors the sensation of being at the bottom of the lake. The museum also has a “Discovery and Exploration” room equipped with microscopes, offering opportunities to observe and touch many biological, geological, and cultural specimens.
