What to expect
Taichung is a vibrant and bustling city located in the heart of Taiwan. As the first modern city planning proposed under Japanese colonization, Taichung quickly developed through the cross-island railway system built in the early 20th century. Today, Taichung is the perfect midway city between North and South Taiwan for businesses and commuters - with only an hour of High Speed Rail each way! Follow our guides on this tour, and we will take you through the streets of downtown Taichung to explore its rich stories through colonial city planning, new urban spaces, different architectural styles, and unique local treats!

We had an amazing time on the Taichung Free Walking Tour (Rail and River Route)! Our tour guide, Pei, was excellent — she was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of interesting historical and cultural information throughout the tour. Her communication skills were impressive, and she made sure everyone in the group was engaged and comfortable. The route was well-planned, with a good mix of nature, heritage, and hidden gems around Taichung. We especially appreciated how Pei answered all our questions enthusiastically and gave helpful recommendations for places to visit after the tour. Highly recommended for first-time visitors and anyone who wants to experience Taichung from a local’s perspective. Thank you, Pei, for a memorable experience!
Pei was wonderful! She even created a foldable map of the walking route and during the tour, she had quizzes and lots of show and tell, to break any monotony of the walking tour. For 3 hours, we covered a lot. She also went into details on the history of each site. Lota of passion shown in her delivery of the tour. Kudos and highly recommended,
We had with fun with our Walking Tour. Jessica has a very good talking voice and personality. We got a lot of information from her about Taichung. Thank you also Jessica for showing us the Second Market and the great food. Too bad we did not win the lottery :)
Our tour guide Rowena is very polite, very helpful, knowledgeable. She can switch between both Chinese and English and with us good history of Taichung railway, river and pastry. Good 2.5 hours slow walk in a cooling morning. Keep in up.
It was a great morning walk through Taichung old town learning the history of Taichung railway and the scenic green canal. Interesting old buildings and good food at the 2nd Market
The guide, Mr. Kai, was knowledgeable on the history of Taichung, which helped us picture the life of the people back then. Cheers to more walking and learning!
The meeting point was very convenient, right at the entrance of the Taichung Railway Station Tourist Center. Our guide, PEI, was already waiting for us at 9:55 am. Originally, four people were supposed to participate in the Walking Tour, but in the end, it was just the two of us, turning it into a private tour. PEI explained the itinerary and the history of the attractions in great detail. She was always smiling. This tour was mainly in English, and when I didn't understand something, she helped me out in Mandarin. My husband and I felt it was very cost-effective. She made a simple, easy-to-understand itinerary with illustrations, folded into a booklet shape, which was interesting. The tour concluded successfully at the Second Market at 12:30 pm. Klook probably charges too little at HK$2 each. Of course, we had to tip the tour guide to thank her for her sincere and enthusiastic service. I understand that many people book but don't end up coming because charging HK$2 is really too cheap.
You can explore Taichung on your own or join a tour. We opted for option B and gained so much insight, seeing the Central District in a completely new light afterward. Our guide, Rowena, took us to so many wonderful spots that we never would have discovered on our own. With great passion and her extensive knowledge of the city and Taiwan's history, Rowena brought her homeland closer to us. She was open to all questions and is simply a wonderfully kind person whom we will cherish. Thank you, Rowena, for this amazing tour.
Rowena was our guide and was super knowledgeable and passionate about the history and development of Taichung. The tour is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about the city. Rowena have us free fruit and sun cake snack along the route.
