The Art of Kintsugi: Traditional Golden Repair in Tokyo Asakusa

- Immerse yourself in a hands-on workshop in Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district.
- Master traditional techniques using authentic urushi lacquer and gold powder.
What to expect
Discover the soul-stirring art of Kintsugi at a serene studio in the heart of Tokyo. This immersive workshop invites you to breathe new life into fractured ceramics, turning "broken" into "beautiful" through a centuries-old Japanese tradition. Under the expert eye of a master artisan, you will carefully reassemble pottery fragments using classic lacquer and shimmering gold powder. Beyond the craft itself, you’ll delve into the profound philosophy of Wabi-sabi—the art of finding grace in flaws and celebrating an object’s unique history rather than hiding its scars.

I visited with my kids, and it turned out to be a great family activity that everyone enjoyed. The experience was interactive, engaging, and kept both the kids and adults entertained from start to finish. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome throughout our visit.
had the best time ever! Saira, Ann, and Elijah were very friendly and accomodating. They guided and helped me throughout the whole process. I’m so happy with my artwork. This is the perfect remembrance/souvenir from Japan.
A+++!!! Would highly recommend! My friends and I had a GREAT time making our plates. We topped up to get darker coloured plates for a more prominent gold contrast and have no regrets. It was about 2000-4000 yen to top up. Elijah and Kanon were great instructors - patient and super friendly. The workshop lasted 1.5 hours and it was money well spent! The space is super comfortable and lovely. They also do chopsticks making and knives making in this studio.
Located in a comfortable building in Asakusa, it was easy to find, and the spacious interior made the class very enjoyable. Even though I visited alone, Shirin Sensei took great care of me and was consistently kind and helpful, making my first Kintsugi experience incredibly satisfying. It was a very meaningful experience, and you can even take the plate home as a souvenir, so I highly recommend trying it! It's a great class for individuals, friends, and families alike. I highly recommend it!
one of the best experiences i had in tokyo. the instructor was patient and clear even with the language barrier, walked us through every step of repairing a real broken piece of pottery with gold. the concept of kintsugi is beautiful on its own but actually doing it with your hands makes it hit differently. cozy studio, everything provided, about 1 hour which felt just right. came out with a piece i’m genuinely proud of and will actually keep. would 100% recommend especially for solo travellers, it’s meditative and you leave with something really meaningful
It was a great experience. Erika assisted us and gave us instructions on how to restore the bowl. It was a fun activity that lasted almost 2 hours. There are several options to choose from; some are included in the price, while others require an additional fee. Highly recommended!
The experience was smooth, I was able to make my own kintsugi then. The key is you need to be really patient, it’s not as easy as it is. Kanon was nice and supportive, thank for helping me.
very unique activity in Japan! the shaving/filing was a bit tiring so choose your ceramic item wisely 😋, but the lacquer step and gold dusting step were very calming, find your inner peace to properly put the glue and gold.. the instructor Keisha was very fun to work with, she even helped me since I was getting tired to file the bowl
kumiko and Erica were our guides. super nice ladies and helpful. The process was very well set up. The workshop is in a touristy part of the area. Our process took a bit longer (2 hrs) than our groupmates since we chose bigger plates and we were a bit slow. but they were still very nice, polite and helpful. great experience. teaching us to see beauty in the imperfections
This was a great experience for our family! April and Morgan were very patient teachers. I would recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo.
