What to expect

  • Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley) | A Secret Wonderland Gifted by Volcanoes Boasting a volcanic crater approximately 450 meters in diameter, formed by the eruption of Mount Hiyori, it is the most impactful natural wonder in the Noboribetsu Onsen area. The valley is dotted with fumaroles, where high-temperature steam rises, and the desolate, vast landscape exudes an ethereal atmosphere, as if stepping into an ancient secret realm. Due to its magnificent yet solitary scenery, it earned the name “Hell Valley,” with every step revealing the mysterious power of the volcano.
  • Mount Usu Ropeway | Overlooking the Volcanic Spectacle from the Clouds Mount Usu, a globally active volcano, has erupted four times in the past century, carving the dynamic texture of the earth. Take the ropeway through the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Global Geopark, embracing the entire volcano from a cloud-level perspective, taking in the full view of the volcano and Lake Toya. The wind carries both the grandeur and gentleness of nature, with every frame a heartwarming painting of mountains and seas.
  • Bear Ranch | Hokkaido’s Adorable and Healing Moments Brown bears, Hokkaido’s largest wild mammals, find a gentle encounter paradise here. During feeding time, the憨厚 bears stand up and wave adorably, their plump figures charmingly cute. Their tamed, non-wild demeanor instantly melts away travel fatigue, holding Hokkaido’s purest cuteness and joy.
  • Lake Toya Lakeside | The Unfrozen Lake’s Four Seasons of Serenity Lake Toya, stretching approximately 11 kilometers east to west and 9 kilometers north to south, with a circumference of 50 kilometers, is a clear lake at an elevation of 84 meters and an average depth of 117 meters. Its waters are as clear as a mirror, reflecting the sky and distant mountains. Even in the dead of winter, the lake surface remains rippling. As Japan’s northernmost unfrozen lake, it offers beautiful scenery in all four seasons, with gentle breezes creating ripples of tenderness across the lake.
  • Mount Yotei | Hokkaido’s “Little Fuji” Spectacle Mount Yotei, affectionately known as “Ezo Fuji” due to its resemblance to Mount Fuji, stands like a miniature sacred mountain between the heavens and earth of Hokkaido. Its majestic and towering form, with a snow-capped peak year-round, complements the surrounding grasslands and lakes, exuding a tranquil and grand aura. Looking up, one sees the masterful craftsmanship of nature, both gentle and powerful.
  • Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival | A Dreamlike Feast Carved from Ice and Snow Lake Shikotsu, Japan’s northernmost unfrozen lake, has crystal-clear waters, like a sapphire left in the human world, exuding a clear and ethereal charm. During the Ice Festival, ice pillars stand tall and snow piles are scattered along the lakeside. As night falls, lights illuminate one after another, and the interplay of light, ice, snow, and lake creates a series of dreamlike and magnificent ice and snow wonders, as if stepping into a winter fairy tale, captivating at first sight.
Dense green vegetation envelops the valley, with reddish-brown rock formations contrasting sharply with the lush green plants. Geothermal steam lingers among the trees, creating a naturally cool and ethereal atmosphere.

Review for: Lake Toya Fireworks Night Feast - Meeting Point (4.28-10.10)

Thanks to our guide Lucy's wonderful introduction, we learned so much about Hokkaido, which was incredibly helpful! The trip was also very enjoyable. Although it was a bit cloudy when we set off, it gradually cleared up, and the scenery around Lake Toya was absolutely beautiful. While the fireworks weren't as grand as New Year's Eve fireworks, they were launched over the lake not far from the shore, making them quite spectacular and memorable!

Review for: Lake Toya Fireworks Night Feast - Meeting Point (4.28-10.10)

Our tour guide, Joy, was very thoughtful on this trip. She adjusted the itinerary so we could see all the attractions. She also recommended many local Hokkaido delicacies. The small fireworks display viewed from the boat was beautiful. The bear farm was a bit small, and the 1000 yen admission fee was a little expensive. The only downside was that it was already dark around 7 PM at Lake Toya, and the street lighting wasn't very sufficient.

Review for: Noboribetsu Toya Lake Day Trip - Meet at the Meeting Point

Our guide, Joy, was very enthusiastic in explaining Hokkaido's local culture and tourist information (including details for each attraction). She was also happy to recommend local delicacies, making her a very friendly and helpful guide. The Mount Usu itinerary is a must-do, especially the cable car ride to the observation deck for panoramic views of Lake Toya, the volcano, and the surrounding mountains and fields, as well as the bear farm at the foot of the mountain. Overall, it was a very rich and unique itinerary!

The route planning is decent, but the only drawback is that I haven't seen the maple leaves turn red yet.
