Lukang Folk Arts Museum | A Cultural Treasure Trove Traversing a Century of Time
When visiting the quaint town of Lukang, the Lukang Folk Arts Museum, a landmark that carries a century of history and cultural elegance, is a must-see.
Originally the former residence of the Ku family, one of Taiwan's five major families, the building adopts a Taisho-era Western-style building mixed style. It took six years to complete. When it was completed in 1919, it was the first Western-style building in the area. The integration of various Western classical architectural styles is a classic in the history of Taiwanese architecture, and locals call it "Dawa Building". It is also a folk house in Taiwan with great historical significance and representation.
In 1973, the Ku family, upholding the spirit of "taken from society, used for society," established the Lukang Folk Arts Museum Foundation, transforming the ancestral home into a cultural museum that preserves Taiwan's living memories. The museum has a collection of more than 6,000 precious cultural relics, covering food, clothing, housing, transportation, religious customs, and festival culture from the Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. From wedding gifts and living furniture to religious rituals, each piece tells the social landscape and life aesthetics of Taiwan over the past century.
