What to expect
- Gubei Water Town is a comprehensive resort area located in Miyun District, Beijing, designed to mimic the style of a northern water town. It is adjacent to the Simatai Great Wall and integrates natural scenery, historical culture, and leisure entertainment.
- Gubei Water Town combines northern residential architecture with the layout of a Jiangnan water town, primarily in the Ming and Qing dynasty styles, with crisscrossing rivers and scattered stone bridges.
- The Simatai Great Wall is one of the most original sections of the Great Wall of China, known for its steepness and unique beauty, and is hailed as "the best of the Great Wall." The Simatai Great Wall has not undergone extensive restoration, with 20 watchtowers still existing (10 of which are open). In 2012, it was rated by UNESCO as "one of the top 25 must-see scenic spots in the world."

My trip with guide Ian was fulfilling and enjoyable. Since it was Labor Day weekend, the bus was completely full, and there were many Korean groups. He explained in English and Chinese, so I focused on learning history as if I were taking a listening test. If you come to Beijing, you must take the Gubei Water Town tour. It's truly vast, unique, and every spot is a photo opportunity. I was also surprised by how massive the Great Wall was when we went up by cable car. I was worried I'd only see the backs of people's heads due to the Labor Day holiday, but it was actually great because there weren't many people, perhaps due to the rain and cold. It's a place you can thoroughly enjoy even without a Korean-speaking guide.
Roberta, the tour guide was very knowledgeable. she’s very helpful and pleasant to communicate with. Since we already toured the Great Wall in Mutianyu, on this package we chose to get the Hotsprings to relax our body after yesterday’s hike.Plenty of time to explore the Water Town during the day and in the evening the park will Lights Up at 5:30pm! Amazing 10 minute Fountain Show that would end up the tour. I highly recommend this tour.
We had hiccup at Guomao subway station to find the F exit gathering point. Ended up we took DiDi to catch up at another meet up point. It was a free and easy tour once we reached Gubei Town. We strolled around the town, climbed up Gubei Church to see sunset and hike Simitai Great Wall in the evening. The view was spectacular. It ended with drone presentation.
This was the most relaxing and comfortable trip since I arrived in Beijing. Our tour guide, Cindy, was well-organized, friendly, and polite. We were lucky to visit Gubei Water Town before the peak season in Beijing, so it wasn't crowded and was easy to explore. I really loved the original appearance of Simatai Great Wall, and the sunset view was absolutely stunning. It's a shame the trip was only one day. If time permits, I'd recommend spending two days in the water town: one day strolling through the town and visiting the Great Wall at night, staying overnight to enjoy the hot springs, and then exploring the Great Wall during the day before returning to Beijing.
To avoid commuting to Gubei and Simatai Great Wall, we took this tours so everything will go smoothly and it did. Despite the fact that there was no pick up from our lication directly, it was easy to look for the meeting point. The tour guide Lulu was friendly and spoke understandable English. She guided us well and informed us of things we need to do to maximize our trip. The tour has an optional hotpot meal you can avail when Lulu opens about it during the bus ride to Gubei Town. The experience was good and we had a great, fun time.
Jane was such an amazing guide super attentive and took great care of everything from start to finish. Gubei Water Town felt like stepping into a peaceful, glowing ancient village, especially at night with all the lanterns. But the real highlight was the Great Wall at night… quiet, surreal, and honestly unforgettable. Such a special experience I won’t forget anytime soon.
Gubei Water Town is a beautiful and peaceful destination that perfectly combines traditional Chinese architecture with stunning natural scenery. The town is clean, well-organized, and offers plenty of cultural activities, local food, and picturesque spots for photography. The view of the Simatai Great Wall from the town is spectacular and adds to the unique experience. I highly recommend Gubei Water Town to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable getaway near Beijing.
Tour guide Ian is very knowledgeable. I am in my 30s (physically able) and I am glad that I purchase the cable car to and fro tickets for the Great Wall, it’s more than 1 hr of up and down slope without the cable car. With the cable car trip, you can go to the 2nd highest peak with an easy climb. Water town is so beautiful, highly recommended for first time visitors to China!
The water town is beautiful and worth exploring at a leisurely pace. You can enjoy the scenery by boat or walk around to admire the town's charm. For the Great Wall at night, be sure to wear comfortable, non-slip shoes for a more pleasant walk. On the way back, check where to catch the shuttle bus beforehand so you don't miss it after coming down the mountain. Our tour guide was also very thoughtful, letting us know we could ask for assistance if we needed an extra shuttle bus for the return trip. Overall, the experience was excellent, and I look forward to joining a 2-day tour next time.
Loved the entire trip! Have been on other Klook tours but this topped my list. First of all, the tour guide 查查 (aka 小查) was early, so we didn’t have to wait at all since we were also early. She even created a group chat for all participants of the day so she could send us directions, instructions and updates there. Everything was clear and efficient! Other Klook tour guides don’t do this so she really made the experience great 👍 Also, we chose the one-way boat ride option so we could take our time to explore the little town, which was so picturesque.
Good to know
- Day tour of the Great Wall ticket check-in time: 9:00-16:10 (mountain cleared at 16:30)
- Night tour of the Great Wall ticket check-in time: 17:30-20:10. Due to the later sunset in spring and summer, it may not be possible to fully overlook the Gubei Water Town night view during the night tour of the Great Wall, but you can climb the Great Wall to enjoy the beautiful sunset. We appreciate your understanding.
