What to expect
We start this awesome medieval journey towards Almourol Castle, one of Portugal’s trademarks and most famous ‘postcards’ in the country. The castle is an incredible sight and one of the most representative examples of the military architecture of the 12th century.
Tomar was a land given as a fief to the Templars. It was especially important in the 15th century, when it was a center for Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, the organization that succeeded the Templars in Portugal.
Here we can visit the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, the headquarters of the Knights Templar, and a pantheon of all Grand Masters.
We finish this day in great fashion. The Convent of Christ is a magnificent monument, a Templar stronghold back in the day, constructed under the orders of Gualdim Paes, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Rodrigo our tour guide was great! He had a lot of information regarding the Knights Templars alongside a history of Portugal and how the Templats were an integral part of it. I liked the small group of 8 in a minivan as the minivan is able to go farther in destinations than buses, so there is a lot less walking. Almourol Castle and Convento de Cristo Castle were both amazing.
Daniel was excellent and efficient. He was also very knowledgeable on the area and the history of the castle and convent. We appreciated the trivia that he shared whenever we passed by some interesting areas.
