Ecstasy unleashed: Zhang Haochen, Song Yuanming and the China NCPA Orchestra perform Liszt and Wagner
Based at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, the China NCPA Orchestra is led by the world-renowned maestro Lü Jia. It has forged a worldwide reputation since its founding in 2010, and has collaborated with esteemed conductors including Zubin Mehta and Lorin Maazel.
When Franz Liszt played the piano, audience members reportedly fainted with excitement. Richard Wagner, meanwhile, took Western music to unprecedented heights of passion. Music like this demands total mastery and supreme commitment—qualities embodied by soprano Song Yuanming and pianist Zhang Haochen. The phenomenal artistry of Zhang is well known in Hong Kong (the Financial Times praised his “lithe energy, crystal clarity and impressive precision”), while the evening also offers an unmissable opportunity to hear the radiant voice of Song: an international award winner who is in demand at opera houses across Europe, Asia and the USA.
Liszt’s barnstorming concerto is one of the most dazzling showpieces of 19th-century music, while Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde imagines love and longing on a cosmic scale, in music charged with elemental power and the beauty of the sea. Yao Chen’s Garden: Unearthing the Way Home—which seeks order from chaos in music inspired by traditional Chinese gardening—will feel like an oasis at the heart of a concert that ravishes the senses. And to finish, Scriabin’s The Poem of Ecstasy takes that feeling to the next level, in a supercharged, multicoloured outpouring of sonic passion for a colossal orchestra. With music like this, come expecting to experience an evening of off-the-scale emotions.
