Travel is an inherently personal experience. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or for romance, to escape or to explore – there are infinite reasons why people travel, and we’re interested in hearing them.
So we took to the streets of London to ask London locals and tourists alike one simple but important question: “Why people travel?”
For some, the answer was instant and obvious. For others, it took a little longer to articulate what travel gives them, but they were all powerful personal accounts.
Here’s what the first four had to say…

For me, travelling is about discovery. I always go away with an expectation of what the trip will be like, but I’m yet to find a place that hasn’t taught me something new. It could be about the place itself, but also about habits and traditions.
Travelling lets me learn about things I didn’t have an idea about before and that helps me feel connected to things outside of my day to day, and I love that feeling of being part of something bigger.” 🗺

Travelling is the perfect escape from everyday life. Exploring new places and meeting new people helps me to put things in perspective. There’s nothing like a hike up a hill or sleeping in a desert to forget about to-do lists and ‘life admin’!
It also reminds me to be grateful for what I’ve got and gives me the chance to learn about different cultures and ways of life. I try to bring that back with me to adjust and create a better place back home.” 🌍

There are so many things that I enjoy about travelling! Exploring new cultures, talking with locals and experiencing their way of life first-hand. It broadens my outlook and often makes me really appreciate how lucky I am to be able to see new places and cultures. Oh, and the food!!!
Seriously, street food is my favourite thing in the world! Getting to try new things and discovering different tastes and spices just makes me so happy!
I also like finding similarities between different people and places, and finding what connects us. Like smiling! I was in the Philippines when I realised that smiling is universal. We couldn’t understand what each other was saying, but a smile is an instant source of reassurance and friendliness that transcends language. I love learning things like that.

For me, travel is like an out-of-body experience. I’ve been in the middle of somewhere totally new and I’m really caught up in what’s happening around me, but then I realise that all of it still exists and has it’s own life outside of my world and outside of when I’m here.
These places are always alive and happening whether I’m here or not. The world is bigger than me and us, and travel brings me closer to that fact.
It’s humbling and empowering at the same time.
