The Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture, and also in parts of South-East Asia and even Australia!
Traditionally, it is celebrated by lighting beautiful lanterns of all shapes and sizes, which represents beacons to light the way for prosperity and luck. This year, Mid-Autumn Festivals falls on 10 September.
Mooncakes also play a large part in the festival (our favourite part) - a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste. Round mooncakes complement the harvest moon in the night sky at the Mid-Autumn Festival

1. Jim’s Malaysia - The Galeries
We put this up first, because Uncle Jim - founder of Jim’s Malaysia - makes mooncakes once in a blue moon. That being said, his mooncakes can disappear and get sold out in a flash. He offers a variety of exciting flavours that you will surely look out for every year. Jim’s Malaysia makes three options for the crust, multi-layered pastry, crumbly biscuit and the mochi style. You may opt for their Butter Cookie mooncake which is a molten cheese-based crispy cheesecake with your filling of choice if you want the traditional mooncake and Charcoal Durian mooncake if you are feeling more adventurous.
They also recently introduced their DIY kit that gives you a pack of ingredients to make eight delightful mooncakes. Their prices start at $25. Get yours quickly by sliding in their DMs on Instagram @jimsmalaysia.
2. Thai Kee IGA - Haymarket
Thai Kee IGA, the largest supermarket in Sydney's Chinatown, is always well stocked with boxes of mooncake for the mid-Autumn festival each year. Other than the classic lotus root filling they also have savoury options like pork mince and pickles or even this year's special mooncake which is a lil boujee - puff pastry mooncakes with abalone and pork.
5. Stella’s Sweets - Hurtsville
This last one is the most underrated from the list. Stella’s Sweets’ baked goods have their own charm since they are all baked from home! They offer a box of 6 with the following flavors: Classic Salted egg, Matcha Jasmine, Raspberry Rose Lychee, Chocolate Praline, Coconut
Pineapple and Black Sesame. These flavours will surely make you enjoy every bite! The best part is you can pick up your box of mooncakes from Hurstville or have them delivered to your own home.
