If you decide to proceed with your trip - here are alternatives to consider
If you’re already on the move or proceeding with your trip, there’s still a lot open in Japan and South Korea to see that are outside of the standard attractions.
Why not go off the beaten track and take the opportunity to discover some hidden gems and unique experiences instead where the crowds are less likely to be found? Here are some alternative things to check out to make the trip worthwhile:
Japan
1. Experience Japan’s traditions of the tea ceremony, calligraphy and dessert making
Immerse yourself in Japanese culture and uncover the intricate processes that go behind the production of tea - from boiling to serving, there’s lots to learn about. Next up, you can also try your hand at writing Japanese characters using ink, brush and paper. Wrap it all up with making your very own traditional dessert called ‘Higashi’ to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours!
2. Watch a sumo wrestling show
Sumo wrestling is Japan’s national sport and it is like nothing else in the world. It’s a must-do on a trip to Japan! Entertaining for over 1,500 years, these athletes are widely revered and when you witness their skills you will understand why. You may even get the chance to try out some of their moves!
3. Try puffer fish
The chefs at Japan’s number one sushi restaurant, Guenpin Fugu, are masters of their craft and even need to obtain a license in order to make your meal! The tranquil and traditional setting of this famed restaurant will calm your nerves before you tuck into your carefully prepared dish and when you have lived to tell the tale, you will be sharing a story of one of the most unique experiences in Japan.
4. Relax at a hot spring theme park
If it’s chilling, not thrilling, that you’re after then a day of bathing and pampering at Oedo-Onsen-Monogatari is in order. At Japan’s largest hot spring theme park, you can indulge in steam baths, open air hot springs and foot baths before trying your hand at some old-fashioned carnival games and stocking up on Japanese sweets. All the services you would expect at your local beauty salon are available in these tranquil surrounds that are modelled on Japan’s renowned Edo period. Park entry, robe hire, and baths are included in the price.
5. Race through the streets with a go karting experience
Open to people who hold a valid International Driver's Permit issued within the last year, you can see the sights from street level at up to 60km/hour while being led by a professional. The cosplay costumes are optional but, come on, isn’t that all part of the fun? There are a few different places to take part in the Go Karting experience in Tokyo, but in Akihabara there are a few different packages to accommodate for any budget or time constraints.
South Korea
1. Get your glam on at a K-pop photoshoot
Ever wanted to figure out what the whole K-pop thing is about? Now’s your chance with this experience that will have you feeling like a full-on celebrity! You’ll get completely transformed by a seasoned makeup artist and after you’re all glammed up, a photographer will help you find that perfect shot that you’ll be able to take home with you to upload on the Gram.
2. Create your own South Korean hand engraved seal to take home with you
South Korea is THE place to learn about a country with rich cultural history. Take part in the traditional practice of stamp engraving in Seoul, where you can write your own name or customize a logo onto a personalized seal- the perfect personal touch to impress your mates the next time you send them a letter!
3. Dance to your favourite K-pop jams
Learn how to bust a move just like the Kpop idols with the help of experienced dance instructors. From hip-hop, house, RnB, fusion contemporary, jazz funk, and so much more, this BTS-endorsed institution will surely dedicate its time to hone in on everyone's individual styles of all levels - doesn’t matter if you’ve got two left feet!
4. Relax at a women’s spa and bathhouse in Myeongdong
This one’s for the girls - what better way to recover after a full day of shopping on the streets of Myeongdong than a bathhouse? Here you’ll get the chance to soak in a warm ginseng and cypress bath, followed by a sauna and also a body scrub.
5. Learn to make delicious Kimchi and Tteokbokki
We’ve found the perfect food and culture class for the best introduction to Seoul - learn how to make the two most famous Korean dishes, Kimchi and Tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) in Myeongdong, the heart of Seoul - Korea's vibrant capital. Apart from learning the secret behind making great kimchi, your hosts for the day will also let you try on a Hanbok, the Korean traditional costume. After snapping some shots of your Korean garb, enjoy your kimchi or take it home to eat later.
