The Phantom of the Opera is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 french novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra. To date, it is the longest-running show on Broadway and has been running since 1988. In its English counterpart, the West End, it’s been in production since 1986, until its pause during the pandemic.
In 2004, the film adaptation starring Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson hit the cinemas, proving that the Phantom remains a hit across various adaptations.
The musical follows the titular character, The Phantom of the Opera, as a mysterious, deformed “ghost” and composer who haunts the Paris Opera House and takes talented young opera-star Christine Daaé under his wing. As Christine’s career rises with his tutelage, she catches the attention of Raoul, a French nobleman, which riles the Phantom’s jealousy.
Curious as to what happens next? Or do you want to refresh your memory after watching other adaptations? Luckily, The Phantom of the Opera’s Melbourne production has all the answers!
