In the summer of 2017, I was lucky  to go on a holiday in Greece with my family for the first time.
Greece isn’t unfamiliar to most of us as we encounter Greek gods, ancient history  and philosophy in our early years in school. As a teenager, I have always daydreamed about Greece- its rich history, famous archeological sites and of course, the dreamy island of Santorini. Plus, I was a big fan of Mamma Mia as a kid- and I couldn’t wait to sing  my heart out to 'Honey, Honey' and 'Dancing Queen' while prancing around the immediately recognisable blue and whitewashed houses and buildings.
Naturally, I had very high expectations... and am delighted to say I was not disappointed one bit! I spent  a week in Greece and got to visit Athens, and the islands of Santorini and Mykonos. A week was definitely not enough- every day I found myself discovering new reasons to definitely come back one day- but for now, here are my top 5 reasons you should visit Greece!

5 reasons you should visit Greece:

    1. You’ll be in awe of the archeological sites you’ve only read about or seen in history channels

If you're a lover of ancient architecture, Greece will surely be an incredible attraction for you. Seeing the sites firsthand gave me a newfound appreciation for their culture's contributions to modern architecture. You'll be left in awe, wondering how on earth they got to create such incredible and precise structures way back.

    2. Experience one-of-a-kind Greek beaches

Greece is known for its deep blue crystal clear waters and unique beaches- great sand beaches with pristine, fine sand, pebble beaches, and of course, cliff beaches. I was lucky that I went during the summer season- and so I was able to bask in the sun and take a dip in the Aegean sea!

    3. Live like a god/goddess in the famous Greek Islands

You'll be spoilt and surrounded with unparalleled views of the sea, historical buildings, beautiful architecture. You'll feel like as if you're inside a live post card or a movie with everything so incredible around you. Seize your chance to take it all in- have slow days and allow yourself to relax and just enjoy everything that's around!

    4. Greek. Food.

    5. Experience the great balance between relaxation and nightlife

What I love about Greece is that you really can make the most out of your days- like spending morning and afternoons outdoors, taking long walks and long lunches and dinners- and then the rest of your evening partying with locals away. Greeks are very chill, relaxed people.. but they sure know how to party, too! Mykonos is known to be the party island.. a quiet town during the day, and party town at night- a must-experience I must say.

    My most memorable experience

My most memorable experience during the trip was in Santorini (I may be a bit biased!)
It was a beautiful morning, and we were greeted with perfect weather and just the right amount of sunshine- it was quite the perfect timing as my family has planned to go sailing that day to explore the nearby beaches and islands.
Having grown up in the Philippines known for its beautiful beaches and islands, I have been to numerous island hopping tours both locally and in other countries as well, so I wasn’t expecting much if I’m being completely  honest (as I thought I’ve seen some of the best of the best already!) but I was wrong.  As we did a five-hour cruise aboard an elegant catamaran, I found myself astounded by Santorini’s volcanic islands surrounded by the most beautiful deep turquoise waters of the Aegean sea.

The best part? Taking a dip and having a swim in the bluest waters and then getting a hot, relaxing bath in the volcano’s hot springs. The whole day was such an incredible experience. The night was fast-approaching so we hurriedly headed back to Oia to catch the world-famous sunset (pro tip: the Oia Byzantine Castle ruins is known as the best spot in Santorini to admire the sunset!) we waited for the sun to set along with other tourists and locals alike, with all our eyes gazing towards the sea-  and true enough, it was indeed the most stunning, most unforgettable sunset I’ve ever seen!
