The first solo exhibit for Korean artist drawingmary
“I think arts do not have to be overcomplicated for people to enjoy. I hope my works can keep giving people happiness and merriment through the simplest expression until I am a grandmother,” says Korean artist drawingmary.
From 21st May to 21st June, 2020, Gallery by the Harbour is proud to present “Find Your Merry” an exhibition by Korean artist drawingmary. Popular across the internet, drawingmary has had her artworks shown extensively across Korea, and has collaborated with different brands on product design, such as LANEIGE. Featuring a series of acrylic and wooden paintings, this exhibition marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.
In the last decade of her arts practice, drawingmary has been translating the complicated world into a simple and enjoyable one through lines and fresh colours. Figurativeness and abstractness coexist in drawingmary’s works through the use of colour fields. The majority of her work uses simple lines and only a handful of colours. Whether it be a painting of a calm female, a white fluffy dog, or that of a daily object, her works bring joy through her idiosyncratic style.
Through this exhibition titled “Find your Merry”, the artist hopes that the audience can find their happiness by seeing the character of “Mary” in her paintings. “Mary,” in this sense, represents any fun-loving person in the world.
“I believe anyone can have greater happiness if one enjoys the moment,” the artist mentioned.
The cartoon portraits in the paintings could be any of us, celebrating the introspective fundamentals of happiness in the pleasant and relaxing surroundings. All her works are associated with what she sees in everyday life, connecting the viewers to all the merry, yet simple moments.
A total of 49 art pieces will be showcased in the exhibition, while a variety of souvenirs are available for sale. Remember to grab one home for memories!
