What to expect
The Danaiku River is part of the Zengwen River’s upper watershed and is rich in Acrossocheilus paradoxus, commonly known as Taiwan Homalopterid Loach. In the past, outsiders frequently used poison and electric shock to catch fish, endangering the safety of villagers’ drinking water and destroying the original natural ecology of the river. Later, under the initiative of former Township Mayor Gao Zheng-Sheng, the villagers contributed their fishing grounds, which originally belonged to various clans, to form the “Stream Conservation Association.”
The conservation plan began with a series of negotiations and planning in 1985. In 1989, a "Conservation Team" was officially established, along with a "River Protection Committee." Villagers voluntarily formed river patrol teams to prevent electrofishing and poisoning, and to strengthen river pollution prevention. After several years of efforts, the Danaiku River regained its clarity, fish schools became clearly visible, and the natural ecology of the river was restored. In 1992, Shanmei Village won the Council of Agriculture's Model Award for Natural Ecology Conservation. In July 1994, the "Shanmei Community Development Association" was established to operate the village's tourism industry in a community-based manner and promote industrial development. In January 1995, the "Danaiku Nature Ecological Park" was opened. In 2002, Shanmei Tribe was awarded the Presidential Culture Award for the successful conservation of the Danaiku River. Today, the "Danaiku Nature Ecological Park" has become a new tourist attraction in the Alishan area. The success of ecological conservation has also driven the development of the agricultural industry.
