Shirakawa-go
  • Stroll through the old streets of Hida Takayama, immerse yourself in the ancient capital's charm from the Edo to Taisho periods, and savor local delicacies such as Takayama ramen.
  • Head to Shirakawa-go Gassho Village, a World Heritage site, and freely explore its tranquil beauty surrounded by mountains, terraced fields, and streams.
  • Enjoy the winter-limited illumination event and experience Shirakawa-go's unique romantic snowy night under the lights.

What to expect

The winter illumination in Shirakawa-go, open only 4 days a year, is the most precious and limited experience of this trip! As night falls, the snow-covered Gassho-zukuri village is lit up with warm lights, and the old streets, snowy scenery, and dreamlike nightscape intertwine to form a fairytale picture that only appears briefly in winter. The itinerary first heads to the Hida Takayama Old Town (if there is traffic congestion, the sightseeing time may be shortened or the Takayama attractions may be canceled). Stroll through the old streets that retain the style of the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods, where wooden houses, sake breweries, and traditional shops intertwine to form a nostalgic Japanese streetscape. During free lunch time, you can taste Takayama ramen, Hida beef dishes, and local specialty snacks, leisurely experiencing the rustic charm of “Little Kyoto of Hida.” Then, from Takayama, we head to Shirakawa-go Gassho Village. Along the way, the mountain scenery gradually becomes covered with white snow, as if driving into a winter wonderland. Upon arrival, approximately 3.5 hours of free time will be arranged for you to stroll through the Ogimachi Gassho-zukuri village and enjoy the World Heritage scenery surrounded by mountains, terraced fields, and rivers. In winter, thick snow covers the roofs, and the Gassho-zukuri houses resemble fairytale cottages in the snow, allowing you to easily capture atmospheric winter photos. In the evening, we enter the most anticipated Shirakawa-go winter illumination event of the entire trip. Open only 4 days a year, miss it and you’ll have to wait another year! After night falls, warm yellow lights illuminate the pristine white snow and the Gassho-zukuri houses, making the entire village seem like a secret snow-covered realm brought to life. You can freely enjoy the illuminated scenery in designated areas and experience the completely different charm of Shirakawa-go between day and night. Special reminder: This event does not allow access to the observation deck. During the illumination period, there will be many tourists, some roads may be icy, and there may be snow accumulation or falling snow from eaves. Please be sure to watch your step and follow the instructions of on-site staff. If you choose to travel in a small group, you can get off at a designated location in Takayama on the return trip; this drop-off arrangement is not available for bus tours. As this is a deep winter itinerary, please prepare warm gear such as non-slip shoes, thick coats, and gloves in advance. Many areas in Shirakawa-go village are private, and there are no trash cans in the village. Please take good care of your personal belongings and dispose of your trash properly, respect the lives of local residents, and jointly maintain this winter World Heritage village.

The Shirakawa-go light-up event is a special annual festival where the Gassho-style villages are illuminated at night in winter, making the entire snow-covered village look like a magical fairy tale world.

Actually, I estimated the time based on last year's lighting time when I bought the plane tickets. In the end, I really made it to the last lighting ceremony this year. The weather was also very helpful today. Although it snowed all the way, it was sunny almost the entire time we were outdoors. The guide, Amy, was very enthusiastic and knew how to provide emotional value. It was a pleasure working with her. The itinerary was also arranged quite reasonably. The driver was very stable and experienced, with a very accurate grasp of time and road conditions. He was a very kind old man. Even though it wasn't time to get on the bus yet, he opened the door for us without hesitation when we got our shoes wet because the road was dark at night. Overall, it was a very pleasant day, and worth the money.

I was lucky enough to see the light-up event. The tour guide provided detailed explanations, and the overall time spent there was more than enough. I highly recommend coming here; it's a fantastic trip!

The tour is very organized. The guide is knowledgeable and good in English. Amy was really helpful as she provided tips, trivia and her instructions were very clear. Weather was not so good due to the heavy snow but somehow the tour managed to push through and we are so thankful for that.

Probably the easiest way to visit the beautiful village of Shirakawa-go for its Light-Up event. Our tour guide Amy and the bus driver were both super professional and helpful.

The itinerary was good. We went up the observation deck during the day, but only saw the lights at night.

Great package deal, it would be even better if you could add an observation deck ticket.
