What to expect
Recreating Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s boat festivities, Daigo-ji Temple’s Sanbō-in Garden—a World Heritage site he designed for the famed “Daigo no Hanami”—will host a Nighttime Autumn Performance with Noh excerpts and shō music amid illuminated autumn colors. A boat on the pond becomes the stage, reviving funayūgi and blending history and classical arts. The program runs Nov 29–Dec 7, 2025 (doors 18:30 / show 19:00): Fujito and Funa-benkei on the 29th, shō on the 30th and Dec 6th, and Tōru with Funa-benkei on the 7th. Noh is performed in formal kimono without masks or costumes, while the shō adds ethereal harmonics across the water. Led by Haruhisa Kawamura and Tokiko Ihara, the event supports Daigo-ji’s cultural preservation.
