What to expect
Bring your phone or small camera and capture a real Waitomo glowworm cave adventure away from the crowds. This 3.5-hour guided tour takes place on a private family-owned farm and is limited to small groups of 2–8 guests.
After a safety briefing, you’ll be fitted with warm clothing, gumboots, a helmet and headlamp. Walk through native bush and the Mangapū Gorge before spending around two hours exploring a natural cave system.
Wade through shallow streams, climb over rocks and boulders, crouch through short passages and discover larger limestone chambers filled with glowworms, stalactites and stalagmites. There are no concrete paths or electric lighting. Complimentary guide photos, tea, coffee and biscuits are included. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Reviews
Excellent, and highly recommended - Small group tour (maximum is 6-8) with Ash, an experienced guide who is very friendly and helpful. All the needed equipment is provided, including cave exploration outfit, boots, and helmet with flashlight. Seeing the underground cave system was both humbling and awe-inspiring; the glow-worms looked like constellations on the cave ceiling.
the journey is very very exciting and little bit challenging as we climb through the rocks to reach the gloworms habitats, and it’s totally worth it! The guide is super funny and helpful as well!
The guide was very humorous and witty, and their photography skills were also quite good. I initially thought it would be tiring, but it wasn't at all. Inside, you can see not only fireflies but also many stalactites. I highly recommend checking it out. We drove ourselves there, and the location wasn't hard to find.
3/4/2026 We adventured Down to Earth-Echo Cave yesterday! It was the most natural cave I have ever went! My first experience walking in the underground stream without worry about any harmful animals! The glow worms that looked like the stars on the sky were awesome. I mostly like the guide person who is knowledgeable and hummuses and kind and helpful and respectful. His wife is very hospitable, the tea and the coffee and the cookies and the chat that made me like home! I will definitely recommend my relatives and friends about the Down to Earth-Echo Cave!
Highly recommend experiencing this small group tour of 5 to a maximum of 8 people! Our guide was Ash, an experienced guide who was very friendly, humorous, and helpful. He led us through the caves, explaining the cave structure, observing the creatures in the stream, crouching through crevices, and even tasting spring water along the way. Most importantly, we were able to take pictures of the area and even the glowworms (without flash, of course). The glowworm "starry sky" was also impressive because once our eyes adjusted to the darkness, the glowworms looked like thousands of stars on the cave ceiling, making us feel like we were on a wonderful cave adventure.
This was a pleasant activity. We changed into rain boots, cold-proof clothes and helmets provided by the merchant. These equipments were very clean and the clothes smelled good. The boss is very humorous. When he took us into the cave, he hummed songs and chatted humorously. We originally booked for three adults and one baby, because the purpose of traveling is to take the children to see the world. Unfortunately, it is recommended that children over 12 years old can enter, but the merchant was very good and took the initiative to let us refund one ticket and take care of the baby alone. Originally, I searched online and found that we can bring babies in, but they must be held in their arms. It may be different in different places. The merchant is very friendly and our whole family likes them. You can bring your mobile phone with you, but it is not recommended to bring cameras or any bags. The merchants will also take photos for you and send them to the designated email address for free. This is a place worth visiting. I look forward to coming again next time I come to New Zealand. Moreover, when we refunded the ticket, the merchant took the initiative to write to Klook, which shows that they are a very reassuring merchant.

110% recommend this tour if you’re looking for a unique experience and love being active. This is a family-run business and we love how passionate Ash and Michelle are about it. Ash is a fantastic guide - super witty, knowledgeable, plus he takes great photos of the glowworms with his Huawei!
Highly recommend, good size group, wonderful views, not bombarded by normal tourist groups. LOVELY
