The TRA 3-day pass was just right for completing my round-island trip. I booked the tickets in advance and then activated and picked them up, and I also got the Taipei-New Taipei-Keelung 2-day pass for the MRT and buses. I highly recommend this service if you need to take a train. This time, we went to Kaohsiung first, then to Alishan. For Alishan, we used the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus and had made a reservation in advance via the app. We had a 16-minute layover, but I'm not sure if the bus arrived early or the train was delayed. As soon as we exited the train station, a crowd of people boarded the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus. Our reservation was completely useless, so we ended up sitting in the very back row. The ride was quite uncomfortable, constantly winding through mountain roads. However, on the way back from Alishan, we were able to use the reservation feature, and getting on the bus early made a huge difference. We didn't have to sit in the back row, and the experience of the winding roads was much more pleasant. If you have similar travel plans, I highly recommend using this service.

Taking advantage of this buy-one-get-one-free subsidy, I went on a backpacking train trip. I planned to go to Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, and Kaohsiung. The next morning, I took the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle down the mountain from the Alishan Transportation Center back to Chiayi Railway Station, then took the Taiwan Railways train to Xinzuoying for a short stop, and caught the next train to Taimali to check in. On the third day, I headed from Taimali to Chishang, and finally headed north. You can book train tickets online in advance via the Taiwan Railways e-Ridepass app and exchange them for physical tickets at the railway station before the payment deadline. Once you have the physical tickets, you can use the Taiwan Pass to book the round-trip Taiwan Tourist Shuttle tickets for Alishan online. People with booked tickets get priority boarding. Overall, I found this experience to be a great value for the money, but it would be even better if the train tickets could be linked to your phone online, eliminating the need to make a special trip to the railway station to exchange them for physical tickets and avoiding the risk of losing paper tickets. I originally wanted to redeem the Taipei-New Taipei-Keelung Fun Pass for a 2-day tour, but redemption is limited to the airport and Taipei Main Station. Since it wasn't very convenient on my route, I didn't end up getting it. Using the train and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle this time, even though there were a few minor flaws, I'm still so glad I had the opportunity to complete an around-the-island trip with this cost-effective pass!
