An absolute must-see – the Railway Museum in Saitama! Anyone with even a spark of enthusiasm for trains will love this museum. Spanning over 9,000 square meters, visitors can delve deep into the history of Japanese railways, featuring real locomotives, interactive exhibits, and impressive technological experiences. (Sumikai) Over 36 faithfully reproduced vehicles are on display, and thanks to lighting, music, and video effects, even stationary trains come to life. (ANA) The absolute highlight for me was the ride on the small mini-train – in that moment, you completely forget your age and become a child again. That smile won't fade anytime soon! The museum is easily accessible from Ōmiya Station via the "New Shuttle" – the journey itself sets the mood for the adventure. (Japanliebe) For families, train enthusiasts, and nostalgia lovers: definitely plan a visit!
easy to redeem ticket, the place is huge. there is a kids plaza with place for the kids to play separated for infant, toddlers and bigger kids, and there is a kids cafe too. for the mini train driving attractions, you need to download the railway app and win the time slot for the attraction. per entry for a family (3 person per train) is 600 yen. it's about 20 minutes per ride. one phone can get only 1 slot of the mini train ride. the exhibitions is big and really fun for train enthusiasts. there are other attractions such us VR (theres a fee) and diorama (free). all and all, it's a good experience.
Very nice, my child had a lot of fun. All the models and extras in the museum are very well done. The terrace and restaurant are very complete, not to mention the souvenir shop and gachapon machines, as well as the commemorative goshuin with the stamp of the day you visited.
Highly recommend this place – affordable and fun! I suggest eating at the bento shop outside on the first floor; their bento boxes are nicer. We didn't realize there weren't any Shinkansen bentos until we got to the fourth floor, but we were too tired to go back down 🥲. Remember to bring your own Shinkansen train to play with!!! Otherwise, your son will end up crying and wanting to buy one like mine did… They do sell them there, but you'll also need a screwdriver and batteries, ugh! Before you go in, you'll need to download the app to enter the lottery for play access. Since my kids are small, a lot of the activities are for elementary school students, so I didn't download it. We took the Shinkansen to the Railway Museum this time. If your kids love trains, you can take the Shinkansen (unreserved seating) to Omiya and then transfer to the New Shuttle. It costs around $288 from Ueno or $350 from Tokyo! You're not allowed to take photos while riding the mini-train. The staff will stop you 🚫. Since I don't understand Japanese, the first time, I thought she wanted me to put my bag in the locker. When I picked it up, I was stopped again, and then I understood🤣. She was quite stern…
No fuss at the entrance. Just scan and enter. A must go to place for anyone interested in trains, or simply want to understand how Japan Railway operates. Signs are mostly in Japanese with some English translations.
Amazing museum! the place is huge with everything you would want to know about Japanese train history. There are lots of things for children to do as well. There are restaurants, exhibits, simulators, and a gift shop. Easy train ride from any where in Tokyo. A must see!
My experience is beyond my expectation. I never thought it's gonna be too fun. There are a lot of interactive activities though most of them are thru raffle. So you have to download their app before and enter the raffle and hope to win. I was lucky I got accepted in two of them, Miniature Train Driving and D51 Simulator. D51 Simulator is the best among them. It is so much fun. It really feels like driving a train with all the parts you have to remember. Also learning the history and seeing the model train from the past to present. It makes me realize the human mind is truly amazing.
easy entry through a long counter on the right by scanning the klook voucher to the staff. reached there about 1pm on sat, all sold out for self driving train! need download an app to secure the timing. will be back next time early! take note of the rotating train platform show at 12pm and 3pm where there will be a long train horn. a must to visit this train museum!

Guide

The Railway Museum opened in October 2007 in Omiya, Saitama City as the centerpiece of the JR East 20th Anniversary Memorial Project. The museum opened the new south building in July 2018, and the main building was fully renovated as well. The museum now consists of 5 different stations, the Rolling Stock Station, Science Station, Job Station, Future Station, and the History Station. With the renovation, the museum was reborn as a hands-on museum telling the story of the relationship between people and railways using various themes.

  • Exhibit 42 powerful real vehicles including outdoors!
  • Let's experience the simulated operation of railway vehicles with a "mini driving train" and "simulator"! Japan's largest railway diorama is also must-see.
  • Centering on hands-on exhibitions on the themes of "Rolling Stock" "Science" "Job" "Future" and "History" the rich story of people and railways will be developed from a variety of perspectives.
  • Children can have fun too. There is a playground that induces learning while getting familiar with railways.
  • Various materials collected by the museum over the 100 years since the opening of the first railway museum are on display. The “Railway Cultural Gallery” introduces the connection between Japanese railways and culture from a fresh perspective.
  • Original goods can only be obtained at the railway museum shop, and you can also enjoy the food culture and station bento nurtured by Japanese railways.
  • Let's see the Shinkansen and conventional trains running from the rooftop observatories of the main building and the south building.
