Extremely easy to redeem. Did not need the Klook QR Code but simply gave the full name used for the booking to staff 15 mins before departure to exchange for a boarding pass which was collected from us when boarding the ferry to Tiritiri Matangi. There was only one ferry on a Saturday so we weren't given a return boarding pass. Ferry departed on time, was relatively stable and only a little shaky on our way back to Auckland due to wind. Can get cold on the ferry to and from Tiritiri Matangi so would suggest bringing a thin jacket (we visited in mid March). Toilets are very clean on board, and offered a range of snacks including sandwiches, cookies, brownies, museli, muffins, and chips alongside basic coffee. Food prices were reasonable for ferries. There's no food or drink for sale on the island or at the souvenir shop so would highly recommend bringing your own food for a picnic on the island. It was easy and relaxing to walk around, suitable for all fitness levels while enjoying some stunning views. If you want to capture good bird photos, you would need a photography camera as the birds fly fast and you'll end up with more landscape photos like me! They offer to help carry/drive any heavy bags up and down the mountain for you for free - the ranger will do a quick briefing at the beginning to let you know of this, and about how to maintain the island before everyone's let free to roam. We walked at a moderate speed taking photos and a break to eat along the way, and managed to complete the entire island around 2pm before we arrived at the lighthouse and souvenir shop where we rested until just after 3pm. We then took our last 20 minute walk back to the ferry terminal from there. Would recommend taking a day trip out :)
Awesome day and amazing for a birder. we liked around the whole island which took about 3 hours at a decent pace. wonderfully organized and the ferry was clean and nice. friendly staff and safe.
Great experience to this bird sanctuary island. we added NZD10 per pax for the guided tour which made the whole journey so meaningful. learnt a lot about nature and birds in this trip.
I booked a ferry to observe birds at Tiritiri Matangi Island. The ferry is operated by a different company than the one that operates the ferries to Waiheke Island and other islands, and the ferry dock is located far away. It's in front of the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Unfortunately, I didn't see any penguins, but the other birds were so cute and I was very satisfied. I was glad that I didn't have to leave my large luggage (backpacks and suitcases) in a locker because they just put it on the ferry and stored it for me when I arrived. It was November, so I imagined it would be spring-like weather, but it was cold.
Our ferry ride to Tiritiri Matangi was an excellent experience from start to finish. Right from boarding, it was clear that passenger safety is a priority, as all safety instructions were displayed clearly and appropriately throughout the vessel. The journey itself was incredibly smooth, making for a very relaxing start to the day. I was especially impressed by the small, thoughtful touches—they provided ginger candies to help ease sea sickness for those who needed them. It’s that kind of attention to detail that makes a trip memorable. Highly recommended for a stress-free trip to the island!
Auckland Tiritiri Matangi, the Bird Island. If you are a bird enthusiast, this island is a must-visit. You can observe various rare species of birds that only exist in New Zealand. Ferry tickets from Auckland City Ferry Terminal or the ferry terminal on the North Shore are included.
Even before setting foot on Tiritiri Matangi, the ferry ride from Gulf Harbour was a highlight. The crew was friendly and full of great tips for spotting wildlife once on the island. We saw little blue penguins floating on the water and several seabirds riding the bow wave. The boat is comfortable, with both indoor and outdoor seating, and the captain slowed down whenever someone spotted dolphins or penguins. Just remember to book ahead – it sells out quickly, especially on weekends. My only small gripe: bring your own snacks, as onboard options are limited. Still, easily 5 stars for the smooth trip and incredible approach to the island’s beautiful lighthouse.
A beautiful island with restored nature that is great for bird watching and hiking. The ferry is comfortable with, surprisingly, good value food on board. all the staff were friendly and the service was punctual.
This is an island where you can see beautiful nature! I had a good time! Check the round-trip ferry times carefully and have a pleasant trip!
Island with lots of birds, ferry ride was quite long with choppy sea waves
