In an ever-changing Beijing, it is easy to forget that China's vibrant and modern capital is still home to some of the country's oldest and most beautiful courtyard home. In the hutongs (old alleys) of old Beijing you can discover local life, still lived by many. In the alleys and hutongs of old Beijing you can really get a flavor of what life must have been like in an old imperial city when the Emperor ruled absolute. Choose from a morning or afternoon tour, and as well as exploring deep into a number of Beijing's old hutongs, this half day tour offers you a hard-to-find opportunity of visiting an old local resident's courtyard, and takes you through narrow alleys and lanes to scenic Houhai Lake. Finish the tour at Beijing's Drum Tower and get a bird's-eye view of the surrounding communities now under threat of urban development.

We had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide, Lily Hak, was excellent! She communicated very well before the tour date, met us at our hotel, took us to the rickshaw ride in a premium DiDi, walked with us around the hutong area and lake, took us to the Drum Tower (be there at 4 pm for the drumming!), accommodated stops at a couple of lovely shops (tea and the post office), and took us to dinner, then back to our hotel in a DiDi. Lily is energetic, kind, fun, helpful, and very knowledgeable! Her English is excellent. (FYI, she is also fluent in Russian!) What a fun and educational afternoon. Highly recommend.
Public holiday weekend was not something we anticipated, but we could barely feel it the crowds thanks to our guide’s expert touring. Access to a real Hutong house was a great touch. It was expertly timed to reach the Drum Tower before a show. Highly recommend for a different side of Beijing.
Although it was a rare rainy day in Beijing, our reception guide Mr. Andy was very careful to help us prepare raincoats; during the tour to Houhai/Shichahai and Bell Tower/Drum Tower, he introduced the historical origins and the behind-the-scenes of ancient buildings in great detail The story; in addition, the introduction to private Hutong home life arranged gave us a deep understanding of the daily activities of the five generations of this family for more than 100 years; and then at lunch time, we were taken to the famous stuffing Laoman Dumpling House in Dongcheng District, China, to taste various dumplings / Pies/pot stickers/sauce beef/special Kung Pao chicken/delicious fried peanuts; the 4 of us had a great time eating and were able to taste Beijing’s people’s delicacies. Great guide! He called the night before to confirm our pick up time and place. He made the tour very interesting for the kids.
This half-day tour includes a midday dumpling meal, hotel pickup, and the option to try a rickshaw ride. The summer lotus blossoms make for a wonderful experience.

Relaxing walk through the scenic old town with a rickshaw ride 🚲. The kids especially enjoyed the ~20-minute rickshaw ride. Also visited the Drum Tower and watched a short drum performance, which was a nice highlight. The steps up the drum tower was rather steep though. Our guide was knowledgeable and very accommodating. Overall, a great tour for families.
Our guide Lisa Liu 刘世霞 was fantastic. She was a wonderful communicator, very experienced and knowledgeable. She also made adjustments to our schedule to accommodate the needs of our group comprising children and the elderly. This tour and Lisa greatly enhanced our experience of Old Beijing and our family trip to Beijing.
after the booking I was contacted quite fast by our Guide Andy . that was very helpful. Andy is so friendly, competent and flexible. in our group we were people from 21 -87 and everybody was delighted from Andy’s organization and friendlyness . seeing the old Hutons was really special for us .
