Singaporean artist Dawn Ng's cylindrical "disco time portal" lets you relive a bygone era in your parents' and grandparents' dancing shoes.

Time is a Black Circle is a 25-minute retro music, roller skating experience filled with dancing lights and smoke which pays tribute to the seventies when the Swinging Sixties and Disco Fever were all the rage.
Back in the day, party-goers flocked to the Bras Basah.Bugis (BBB) precinct for live discotheques owned by the likes of Kelong Restaurant and YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association). Of course, the latter’s anthem needs no introduction.
Singaporean artist Dawn Ng has created a “disco time portal”, with a perfectly cylindrical roller skating rink brimming with a symphony of colours and retro melodies. Step into the dancing shoes of your parents and grandparents, and relive a bygone era when influencers of their generations, like The Silver Strings and Rita Chao, painted the town red. Limited seated tickets are also available for this experience.
About Singapore Night Festival
Singapore Night Festival, organised by National Heritage Board, returns this year from 18 - 26 August 2023 to light up the Bras Basah.Bugis (BBB) precinct. From dynamic Projection Mapping and Night Lights installations, to unique, experiential programmes and food experiences, the festival welcomes festival-goers to discover Singapore’s transformative history with the theme “Singapore, the Great Port City”.
Event Information
- Location: Gallery Theatre at National Museum of Singapore, Basement 1, 93 Stamford Rd, Singapore 178897
- Dates: 18 – 26 August 2023
- Sessions: 7.30pm – 11pm (Participants must arrive 30 minutes before the start of their session to complete the registration process)
- Choose from the skating option where you can skate in the installation or the seated option where you can lounge in a specially designated seating zone.
- Ticket Price: $22 per participant from 18 July to 17 August (inclusive of booking fee) $27 per participant from 18 August to 26 August (inclusive of booking fee)
- The minimum age for skating and non-skating participation is 10 years old as of session date. Participants aged 10 - 12 years old must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.
- The organisers reserves the right to deny entry to participant aged 10 - 12 years old unaccompanied by a ticketed adult.
- This activity is for beginner and intermediate skaters only, and it is not recommended for first time skaters.
- By entering Gallery Theatre, you consent to filming, sound recording and photography of the Event by the Organizer and to the use by the Organizer of any such recording or photography anywhere in the world for promotional, marketing and other purposes.

Ein lustiges Erlebnis beim Inlineskaten, wir fühlten uns wirklich wie auf einer Rollschuhbahn in den 70ern. Die Veranstaltung war sehr sicher, es wurde Sicherheitsausrüstung und Platz zum Sitzen und Ausruhen im Zentrum bereitgestellt
Mein Freund und ich hatten viel Spaß. Die Rollschuhe waren wirklich süß und in pastöser Farbe erhältlich. Ich wünschte nur, wir würden daran erinnert, hohe Socken mitzubringen, damit wir nicht 2 Dollar bezahlen müssten, um am Veranstaltungsort eine zu bekommen.
lief immer wieder im Kreis, bis ich kotzte. 10/10 Erfahrung würde ich empfehlen. Man kann dummen Leuten zusehen, die noch nie in ihrem Leben Schlittschuh gelaufen sind, und das immer und immer wieder, und das ist urkomisch.
Tolle Erfahrung! Hilfreiche Crews. Sehr professionell und detailliert in ihren Anweisungen. Der Aufbau sollte jedoch über feste Griffe verfügen, die auch von Anfängern gut gehalten werden können.
Ich liebe die Disco-Atmosphäre und Musik. Habe einen Crashkurs zum Skaten bekommen und danach alleine herumgefummelt 😂 Das Personal war sehr aufmerksam und hat darauf geachtet, regelmäßig vorbeizuschauen
Das Thema gefiel mir sehr gut, die Sicherheitseinweisung war gut. Die Beleuchtung war schön und das Personal war hilfsbereit und nicht übermäßig aufdringlich, während es uns half, als wir wiederholt stürzten. Aber ich dachte, die Ausführung hätte in der Verwaltung verbessert werden können. Als wir um 21.40 Uhr ankamen, hatten sie uns zunächst gesagt, dass unsere Sitzung um 9.30 Uhr statt um 22.00 Uhr beginnen würde. Wir hatten den Eindruck, dass es verwirkt war, aber das Problem wurde behoben und wir durften der 22-Uhr-Gruppe beitreten.
Es war sehr gut! Es hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Wir (meine Frau und ich) waren von der hervorragenden Qualität und dem Aussehen der Rollschuhe im „alten Stil“ überrascht. Auch die Eisbahn war gut und die Musik einfach die Beste. Und vielen Dank an die Crew, insbesondere an diejenigen, die den Leuten mit Schlittschuhen geholfen haben!

Ziemlich lustiges Erlebnis! Mein einziger Wunsch wäre, wenn es länger wäre. Die Stimmung und die Musik waren schön!
Ich liebe diesen Rückblick in die Zeit. Das Skaten hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Ich würde es auf jeden Fall empfehlen, aber vielleicht nicht für fortgeschrittene Skater, da sie sich sonst langweilen würden. Das Personal war super freundlich und hilfsbereit
