One of the best ways to discover St. Petersburg is through the Neva River. Intended to be ‘the main street of the city,’ this river gives you excellent views of plenty of the city’s top sites. Hop on your kayak and head to the first stop, the Vassilevsky Island. This was originally conceived by Peter the Great to be the center of the city. Today, this historic district is home to institutions such as St. Petersburg State University and the Stock Exchange. Moments later, you’ll get an eyeful of the Winter Palace, an impressive Baroque structure for Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter The Great. It was also the main residence of the Russian Tsars. Today, it serves as the main building of the Hermitage Museum. Afterward, admire Peter and Paul Fortress, the first structure to be built in the city and the setting for many fascinating stories in Russian history. Finally, get to see the world-famous Cruiser Aurora. This massive vessel was one of the three Pallada-class cruisers built in the city that was used during the Russo-Japanese War.
