Founded in the 16th century, Amritsar is one of the most revered sites for Sikhs. The city is known for its sacred temples, folk art, as well as its rich food culture. At its heart stands the Golden Temple, the most sacred of Sikh shrines. Amritsar witnessed the historical Jallianwala Bagh massacre in which troops of the British Indian Army opened fire on unarmed locals, leaving over 1,200 injured.
