Sunrise: Lantau Peak

Lantau Peak, the second highest peak in Hong Kong, is also known as Fung Wong Shan (鳳凰山), which means Phoenix in Chinese. It is particularly famous for its sunrise view because when day breaks, the sea of clouds surrounding the peak would gradually disperse into the clear sky and reveal the lovely landscape of Lantau. Starting Point: Get on Bus No. 3M/ 11/ 23 in Tung Chung Town Center Bus Terminus and get off at Pak Kung Au (伯公坳).

Highlight: Maple Leaves

Every December to late January, Tai Tong is colored with orangey-red Maple leaves, filling the cool Autumnal air with a bit of warmth. The Tai Tong trail is a flat, concrete pathway, you may walk leisurely with your lover during mid-day in accompany with the eye-catchy Maple leaves. Though the coverage of Maple leaves in Tai Tong cannot be compared with the ones in other places, located in the tropical area, the appearance of Maple leaves in Hong Kong is already rare. So don’t miss out this once in a year special scenery!

How To Get There?

Starting & Finishing Point:  Take Red Minibus at Yuen Long Citimall (元朗千色廣場) or Bus No.K66 at Long Ping MTR Station (港鐵朗屏站) and get off at Tai Tong Road.  Since the hiking trail starts and ends at the same point at Tai Tong Road, so just return by the same way.

Red Minibus (Yuen Long – Tai Tong) – Fare: $ 5 | Duration: ~ 15 minutes

Sunset: Sunset Peak

Highlight: Silver-grass (芒草)

Sunset Peak, the third highest peak in Hong Kong, is named as Tai Tung Shan (大東山) in Chinese. Situated next to Lantau Peak, it is also a great place to view sunset or sunrise. Yet, it is more renowned for its fields of Silver-grass in November to December. When sunlight spread across the peak in the dawn, the fields of Silver-grass turned into fields of gold, sparkling in the mist.

Since hiking to the Sunset Peak is quite physically demanding, if you would like to view Sunset at Lantau Island, but are looking for a more relaxing option, you may consider joining the 360 Lantau Sunset Tour instead.

Highlight: Stargaze

What’s more romantic than gazing at the starry night with your beloved one? Located at the outskirt of Sai Kung, the West Dam of High Island Reservoir has little light pollution, making it perfect for stargazing. Nearby the reservoir, there is an Astropark open 24 hours daily, displaying ancient Chinese and Western astronomical instruments and also providing modern stargazing facilities for visitors to use for free. Escape from the city and spend a night hiking in tranquility with your lover.

Insider Tips:

West Dam is a popular place where photographers gather to capture the starry night.

  • Do not use white light during your visit, because this would affect photo-taking at night and other visitors may get angry of you
  • Beware of camera tripods, do not kick them!

How To Get There?

Starting & Finishing Point:  Public Transport from Sai Kung to Pak Tam Au ( bus stop near High Island Reservoir) stops service at 19:30 everyday, therefore the only way to get there is to hop on a taxi at Sai Kung City Centre and get off at High Island Reservoir West Dam. 

Taxi – Fare: $~70 (Subject to change) | Duration: ~15 minutes
