Things to note. 1) Everything only opens at 9am. 2) Best to collect your AudioGuide(If you want) at the Customer Service Centre(9am) before going anywhere 3) Don't rush for the Black Madonna, if theres a tour group, let them pass and go after, Timing is key. 4) Best souvenirs are at the Museum 5) For smokers, theres plenty of Smoking bins except for the very top after the Rack Railway.

I'm not sure why theres booking for 830am and 845am when everything's only opens at 9am. I booked got 915am and got to go early, in fact the first ones to be there. The place was very empty before 9. Other only spawn in exactly at 9am, funnily enough. Tickets easy to use. Do remember to collect your Audio Guides at the Customer Service centre, and it needs deposit. Other areas, just show tix and they will just scan. And thats it.

I find it particularly amazing that people were able to build this level of art at this landscape and altitude. The monetary itself is built beautifully and gives such a peace and calm vibe.
Please note that entry is strictly at the scheduled time. Once you receive your voucher, you can show it at the entrance for immediate admission. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by incredibly beautiful scenery. Seeing the Black Madonna statue takes the most time.
Klook offers a wide variety of packages. We chose our desired experience and booked it the day before. We then spent a lot of effort planning our train connections to Montserrat, and the final result exceeded our expectations, as you can see from the beautiful photos attached.
It's a very beautiful place. You don't need to buy a ticket if you're just hiking, but it's worth considering if you're interested in the Virgin Mary statue, the museum, or the church. Alternatively, the official website may offer package deals including transportation, cable car tickets, and admission, which are worth considering.

Guide

Montserrat Abbey (Santa Maria de Montserrat) is a working Benedictine monastery founded in 1025, built into the cliffs of the Montserrat massif — a mountain range designated a Natural Park in 1987. Beyond its scenery, the site holds major religious significance as home to the Black Madonna (patron saint of Catalonia) and the Boys' Choir (Escolania), one of Europe's oldest choir schools, still singing daily liturgical services today. Here's everything travelers need to plan their visit:

Top Experiences at Montserrat

  • Black Madonna Access: View La Moreneta, patron saint of Catalonia, at the enthronement chamber above the Basilica altar. Entry is timed to a fixed slot; access hours are 8:00–10:30 am and 12:00–6:25 pm, closed 10:30 am–12:00 pm for Mass.
  • Museum of Montserrat: Works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso, and Dalí, plus an archaeology collection. Open 10:00 am–6:45 pm.
  • Audio Guide: Available in 8 languages; collected in person at the Customer Service Centre with a returnable deposit.
  • Boys’ Choir (Escolania) performance: Live singing in the Basilica, Monday–Friday at 1:00 pm and Sunday at 11:00 am and ~6:45 pm; term-time only, reservation required.
  • Cogwheel Train (Rack Railway) or Cable Car: Two route options up the mountain from Monistrol de Montserrat; each roughly a 15–20 minute ride.
  • Round-trip train from Barcelona: Direct rail connection from Plaça Espanya to the base of the mountain, combinable with either mountain transport option.
  • Buffet lunch on-site: Available as an add-on for full-day visits, served 12:15–4:00 pm.

Things to note

  • The Boys’ Choir (Escolania) schedule: If you’ve selected the Boys’ Choir product, please note that the 1:00 PM time slot corresponds to the Escolania boys’ choir performance. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Access to the Chapel of Our Lady (Black Madonna) is only available after 3:00 PM.
  • Dress modestly: As an active religious site, Montserrat expects shoulders and knees covered; shorts and sandals are discouraged, and a face-covering rule has applied at times — check current guidance before you go.
  • Weekend and holiday entry to the Black Madonna is time-slotted. Booking online in advance is the standard recommendation to avoid long queues or missing the viewing window entirely.
  • Mornings and late afternoons are best for visiting. Midday can get both crowded and hot, especially in summer; early or late visits also give better natural light for photos.

Traveler Tips

Real feedback from past Klook customers highlights a few things that make the visit smoother:

  • Arrive right at opening: Most facilities (the Visitors Information Centre, audiovisual area, and museum) open around 9:00 am, and are noticeably quieter for early arrivals before the crowds build up.
  • Collect your audio guide early. If your ticket includes one, pick it up at the Customer Service Centre first thing; a deposit may be required, and everything else on-site is scanned directly from your ticket.
  • Expect a queue for the Black Madonna. Wait times vary by time of day, but this is typically the slowest single stop on the visit — especially when large tour groups are moving through. Timing your visit just after a group clears tends to move faster.
  • Entry times are enforced strictly on packages with a fixed time slot — arrive with your voucher ready for the fastest entry.
  • The descent by rack railway or cable car is part of the experience, not just transport — several reviewers called the scenic ride down one of the highlights of the trip.
