See what life was like for migrants arriving at Oamaru, New Zealand in the late 19th century by spending a day inside city’s top heritage attraction! Opened in May 2017, Whitestone City offers visitors a glimpse of Victorian-era Oamaru through live displays, video imaging and interactive features. You’ll enter from the seaside entrance of a restored warehouse and walk across a street lined with period barber and chemist shops, newspaper and architect offices, and even a replica of the iconic Criterion Hotel. You’ll eventually end up in large play area where you can find a carousel with four penny-farthing bicycles and a section where you can take part in games that were popular in 1800s. There is also a small theater where you can watch a video on how ladies used to get dressed back in the day with complicated layered clothing. You can also go inside a reconstructed period saloon where you can see videos about the history of Oamaru. You’ll surely feel like you’ve stepped back in time!
