Head from Sapa to the usually sleepy town of Bac Ha which comes alive every Sunday as eager patrons descend on the Bac Ha Market, the largest in the region. Soak up the vibrant atmosphere and observe the mix of ethnic minority traders that make their weekly pilgrimage to the market from the surrounding mountainous areas. Browse the colourful stalls stocking a variety of local products, including brightly coloured handicrafts and fresh tea. Reach the northern edges of the town to visit Hoang A Tuong’s palace, or Vua Meo, a rather outlandish part exotic church, part French chateau hybrid, constructed by the French in 1921 in an unusual ‘oriental baroque’ style. Afterwards, wander the charming hamlet of Trung Do Village, the rustic home of the Tay ethnic minority group. Settle down for a tasty lunch prepared by a local Tay family and get a glimpse of village life. End the day with breathtaking views as you cruise down the Chay River by boat before heading back to Sapa Town.
