What to expect
This day trip explores UNESCO sites Rila Monastery and Boyana Church. Depart at 9:00 am from Vasil Levski Monument, Sofia, for a scenic 2-hour drive to Rila Monastery, founded in the 10th century.
Admire its 19th-century buildings, 14th-century defensive tower, and rich frescoes during a 40-min guided tour, then enjoy 2.5 hrs free for the museum, photos, shops, or lunch.
Around 14:10, continue to Boyana Church, dating to the 11th century, with unique and well-preserved 13th-century frescoes.
Spend about 40 mins learning their history before returning to Sofia around 17:30–18:30.

Booking tickets, checking in on the day, and the tour itself were all smooth. We didn't sign up for a guided tour, so if you don't manage your time well for lunch at restaurants or similar places, you'll end up with a lot of free time. However, it was a worthwhile tour. As for areas for improvement, the bus was quite old, and we noticed some deterioration (malfunctions) inside the vehicle.

The tour guide Simon explained professionally and could switch between English and Italian fluently. We joined a group with Spanish and Italian speakers, and a large tour bus was full. The English group will be separated from the Yiwen group and have a separate guided tour, which is very good.
The pick-up point is very convenient, and the tour guide is attentive. The long-distance bus will give everyone time to go to the toilet for a short break, and the tour guide will Whatapps you to confirm the previous day. Know before you go
-The visits within the Boyana Church itself are limited to 10 minutes per every group of 8 to 10 people. If you'd like to enter inside, you may also need to queue.
-The Boyana church is closed on the 1st of January, on the Sunday of the Orthodox Easter, on the 24th of December and the 25th of December ─ on such days the tour is done only to the Rila Monastery.
-On certain days, such as around holidays in Bulgaria, or when in groups over 100 people, delays are possible and the estimated tour finish time in Sofia could change as far as 18:30.
- On certain days as 18th of May , 17th of September and 1st of November - Your entry to the Boyana church might NOT be guaranteed.
